THE TEAM: After losing a 72-70 overtime game to Austin Peay in the opening round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, Southeast Missouri State finished the 2000-2001 season with a record of 18-12. In the regular season the Indians were 18-11 overall and 8-8 and in fifth place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Southeast had OVC wins over Tennessee State, Tennessee-Martin (2), Morehead State (2), Eastern Kentucky (2) and Eastern Illinois with losses to Tennessee Tech (2), Austin Peay (2), Murray State (2), Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State.

In non-conference action Southeast had wins over Truman State, Missouri-Rolla, Robert Morris, Cleveland State, Southern Illinois, Southwest Missouri, Campbell, Jackson State and Morris Brown (2) with losses to Toledo, Mississippi Valley State, and Houston.

THE COACH: Gary Garner is 76-41 after four seasons at Southeast and is 323-205 in his 18 years as a collegiate head coach.

He won a Division II national championship in 1995-96 when he guided Fort Hays State to a 34-0 record.

In OVC Tournament games, Garner is 5-3.

FIVE-GAME WIN STREAK: The Indians ended the regular season by winning five straight games for their longest winning streak of the season. In the streak Southeast has wins over Tennessee-Martin, Morris Brown, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State.

The streak ended with the loss to Austin Peay in the opening round of the OVC Tournament.

SANDERS OUT FOR THE SEASON: Amory Sanders, the national leader in 3-point field goal percentage, was lost for the final two games of the season after tearing a tendon in the little finger on his shooting hand. The injury occurred during the Feb. 22 game with Eastern Kentucky. Sanders will have surgery on the finger. He was 1-1 from three in his final game to give him season totals of 53-95 for .558.

SOUTHEAST DEFENSE TOPS OVC: Southeast leads the OVC in field goal percentage defense, 3-point field goal percentage defense and scoring defense. The Indians allow opponents to shoot just .417 from the field and .326 from three while allowing just 68 points per game.

TORRID SHOOTING: During the regular season ending five-game win streak, Southeast is shot .555 from the field, .427 from three and .813 from the line. In the tournament loss to Austin Peay, Southeast shot .558 from the floor, .667 from three and .800 from the line.

SOUTHEAST RANKS 17th NATIONALLY IN 3-POINT FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE: In the latest NCAA Division I stats, Southeast ranks 17th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage. The Indians were 209-525 for .398.

FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE WAS A KEY: Southeast was 16-3 when shooting 44% or better from the field.

FREE THROW PERCENTAGE IS UP: The Indians shot .791 from the line in OVC games. Overall, the Indians improved their free throw percentage to .739. The 2000 NCAA Tournament team shot .702 from the line.

STOKES NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-OVC: Michael Stokes was named second team all-OVC while Emmanuel McCuthison was named honorable mention all-OVC.

STOKES MOVES UP ON ALL-TIME ASSIST LIST: Michael Stokes moved up to eighth place on the all-time assist list at Southeast. He had 268 assists in his two seasons at Southeast and had the highest total for a two-year player. The previous high for a two-year player was 225 by Anthony Hall (1984-86).

STOKES LED IN SIX CATEGORIES: Senior guard Michael Stokes led the team in scoring, assists, assist/turnover ratio, steals, free throw percentage and minutes played. He was third in rebounding.

Stokes who had a career high 27 points against Tennessee State, averages 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He shot .449 from the field, .345 from three and .825 from the line while playing 35.9 minutes per game.

Stokes had two double-doubles this season with 21 points and 10 rebounds vs. Jackson State and 15 points and 10 assists at Tennessee Tech.

He was named to the 40th Annual SunClassic all-tournament team after scoring 21 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and handing out four assists in the Indians consolation round win over Jackson State.

Stokes was the OVC Player of the Week on Dec. 18.

MCCUTHISON LED TEAM ON BOARDS: Senior Emmanuel McCuthison is the Southeast leader in rebounds and is second in scoring. He is averaging 11.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.

McCuthison had a career high 29 points against Southern Illinois. Against SIU, McCuthison sizzled in the first half when he scored 20 points with 6-10 from the field, 4-5 from three and 4-6 from the line. For the game, McCuthison, nicknamed e-mail, was 9-18 from the field, 6-9 from three and 5-8 from the line.

McCuthison was named to the all-tournament team in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City.

DEMOND ESTABLISHED NEW SUN CLASSIC RECORD: Drew DeMond established a new SunClassic tournament record for blocked shots with eight against Jackson State. DeMond's eight blocks also tied the record for blocked shots at the Don Haskins Center at Texas-El Paso.

DeMond was second in the OVC with 48 blocks.

DEMOND SHOOTING IMPROVES: After a slow start at the free throw line, DeMond hit 46 of his last 49 (.938) free tosses. DeMond was 61-79 for .772. In conference games only, DeMond ranked second in the OVC with 39-43 for .907.

In the last eight games, DeMond was 32-41 from the field for .780.

SCHEER MADE PROGRESS: Sophomore Tim Scheer is averaging 8.0 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in OVC games. In the league, he shot .495 from the field, .350 from three and .625 from the line while playing an average of 18 minutes per game

Scheer came off the bench to score a career high 17 points in the home win over Tennessee-Martin. He had a career high nine rebounds at Eastern Kentucky.

SHORT WAS STEADY: Senior guard Antonio Short was a steadying force both offensively and defensively. He averaged 10.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while playing an average of 30.1 minutes per game. He is shot .442 from the field, .396 from three and .693 from the line.

POST BY COMMITTEE: Southeast started three different players at the post position. Terry Rogers had eight starts, Nyah Jones 13 and Daniel Weaver nine.

HENCE CONTRIBUTES: Redshirt freshman Damarcus Hence made solid contributions in the last six regular season games when he averaged 6.5 points per game while shooting 16-32 (.500) from the field.

JONES AWAKENED: Senior center Nyah Jones came alive the final two games of the regular season. After averaging only four points and 2.5 rebounds per game, Jones had seven points and six rebounds in 19 minutes played against Eastern Kentucky and came back with 10 points and nine rebounds in a starting role against Morehead State.

In the OVC Tournament game, Jones had 11 points and a team-hgih six rebounds.

INJURIES: In addition to Sanders season ending injury, Southeast will seek a medical redshirt for senior guard Matt Morris who did not play thjs season because of mononucleosis.

AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast was 10-4 at the Show Me Center this season and is 164-49 (.768) since the Show Me Center opened in 1987.

Southeast averaged a league high 5,054 fans per game.

SCHUBERTH DROPS TO THIRD ON BEST DRESSED LIST: Southeast assistant coach Tom Schuberth is currently ranked third nationally on the latest Fashion Power Index for Assistant Coaches compiled by collegeinsider.com.

The Schuberth wardrobe includes 73 suits (36 Giorgio Armani suits), 70 pair of shoes, 40 dress slacks, 18 sport coats, and over 100 dress shirts.

SID STREAK: Southeast sports information director Ron Hines has worked a nation leading 602 consecutive basketball games. Hines has not missed an Indian basketball game since the 1980-81 season.
