Winans Named Third Team All-OVC

March 6, 2003

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Southeast Missouri State University sophomore guard Derek Winans has been named third team All-OVC in voting by the league coaches and sports information directors.

Winans, last year's OVC Freshman of the Year, led the Indians in scoring and steals. He averaged 15.3 points per game and had 40 steals. In OVC statistics, Winans ranked in the top 10 of five different statistical categories including scoring, 3-point field goal percentage (.413), three-pointers per game (2.4), assists per game (3.6) and assist/turover ratio (1.7).

"Derek was certainly deserving of the honor," said Southeast coach Gary Garner. "He gives you a tremendous effort in every game and every practice in addition to being a 4.0 student in the class room. Derek is one of the reasons that we have a very bright outlook for the resurgence of the basketball program at Southeast."

After two seasons at Southeast Winans has 861 career points and is on course to become the all-time leading scorer at Southeast.

Winans was the only Southeast player honored by the OVC. Junior Brandon Griffin, the OVC's second leading rebounder, was runner-up in balloting for Newcomer of the Year.
