CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri men's basketball coach Dickey Nutt announced Tuesday that Corey Wilford signed a national letter of intent to play with the Redhawks in 2011-12.

A native of Hopkinsville, Ky., Wilford is a 6-1, 185-pound combo/shooting guard, who spent the last two years at Connors State College in Warner, Okla.

"We are extremely excited to announce that Corey Wilford is joining our program," said Nutt. "This is a guy who we wanted to zero in on since we arrived at Southeast. I am proud of my staff and the great job they did recruiting him."

Wilford claimed Second-Team junior college All-American and National Junior College Athletic Association Region 2 Player of the Year honors after averaging 16 points per game and ranking 19th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (81-of-178, .455) last season. He broke a single-game school record with 11 three-pointers vs. Northeast Oklahoma, including eight in the first half.

As a freshman, Wilford averaged 10 points, three rebounds and three assists per contest.

"Corey can do a lot of different things," added Nutt. "He can create his own shot and get to the basket. We felt like we needed a guy with experience, who can shoot and score the basketball. Above all else, Corey is an outstanding young man and we think he can contribute immediately."

Wilford was part of two Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship teams at Connors State. He also led the Cowboys to a Region 2 Tournament title, NJCAA National Tournament appearance and their first-ever No. 1 NJCAA national ranking a year ago.

In addition, Connors State went a combined 56-8 and finished among the top five teams in the nation with Wilford on its roster the last two years.

"Coach [Jeremy] Case and Coach Nutt have been recruiting me for two years now," said Wilford. "Southeast Missouri is a great fit for me and it's close to home. There is a lot of talent coming back next year and I think the Redhawks will be a tough team in the Ohio Valley Conference."

Wilford joins Nino Johnson (F, 6-8, 225, Memphis, Tenn./White Station H.S.) and Telvin Wilkerson (G, 6-3, 190, Memphis, Tenn./Melrose High School), who signed with Southeast in November.
