Expectations run high as men's basketball kicks off 2000-01 campaign with its media day.

2000-2001 Basketball Media Day Notes

Practice Begins on Oct. 14: The 2000-2001 basketball team opens practice sessions on Saturday, Oct. 14, practice at the Show Me Center. The practice begins at 9 a.m.

No Midnight Madness: There will be no Midnight Madness this year because the date falls during Southeast Missouri State's Fall Break and all students will be off campus.

Red vs. Black Scrimmage: Since there is no Midnight Madness this year, the Indians will host a Red vs. Black scrimmage at the Show Me Center on Saturday, Oct. 28, beginning at 1 p.m. There will be contests, giveaways, 3-point contest, dunk contest and a scrimmage. The scrimmage will be in the afternoon prior to the 6 p.m. kickoff of Southeast vs. Tennessee-Martin in football. Fans will have a chance to watch the scrimmage and still take part in pre-game tailgating at Houck Stadium.

Preseason Publications: Five different preseason publications have picked Southeast to finish third in the OVC. Athlon picked Austin Peay first, Murray State second and Southeast third. Dick Vitale's ESPN Preview has Murray first, Austin Peay second and Southeast third. Sports College basketball preview has Murray State first, Austin Peay second and Southeast third. Street & Smith's has Austin Peay first, Murray second and Southeast third and The Sporting News has Austin Peay first, Murray second and Southeast third . Vitale lists the Show Me Center as the toughest place to play in the OVC and calls the Indians a "Rip VanWinkle" team (sleeper). The magazine picks are attached.

OVC Media Day: The Ohio Valley Conference basketball media day for men and women is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Downtown Sheraton in Nashville, Tenn.

Exhibition Games: Southeast will host two exhibition games at the Show Me Center. The Indians will host Team Reebok, a team of former collegians out of St. Louis, on Saturday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m. Southeast will host Dreambuilders, a team of former collegians out of Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m.

Attractive Home Schedule: In addition to the two exhibition games, Southeast will host 14 games at the Show Me Center including match-ups with Southern Illinois-Carbondale and Southwest Missouri out of the Missouri Valley Conference. Southeast will also host Division I foes Campbell and Morris Brown in non-conference action. The Indians will open the regular season with two Division II opponents who were former conference rivals when Southeast was Division II and a member of the MIAA Conference. Truman State will face Southeast on Nov. 17 and Missouri-Rolla will be at the Show Me Center on Nov. 21.

Tough Tournaments: Southeast will compete in two regular season tournaments beginning with the Mountain Energy Thanksgiving Tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The KC tourney is an exempt tournament meaning teams will play three games but only one of the games counts against the 27=game NCAA limit. Southeast will open play at noon on Friday, Nov. 24, going against Toledo of the Mid-America Conference. The winner of the Southeast vs. Toledo game will face the winner of the Auburn vs. Robert Morris game on Saturday. The full tournament bracket is attached. Southeast will also compete in the Sierra Providence Sun Classic Tourney in El Paso, Texas, Dec. 27-28. Southeast will face Houston at 8 p.m. (CST) on Dec. 27 and will face either Texas-El Paso or Jackson State on Dec. 28.

Holidays on the Road: The Southeast basketball team will spend both Thanksgiving and Christmas days on the road. Thanksgiving day, Southeast will bus to Kansas City for the Mountain Energy Thanksgiving Tournament. Christmas day, Southeast will bus to St. Louis for an overnight stay before an early morning flight to El Paso, Texas and the Sierra Providence Sun Classic Tournament.

Redshirts: Southeast will redshirt three players this season. Derek Winans of Shawnee High School in McClure, Ill, will redshirt during his freshman year at Southeast. Joe Webb, an NCAA partial qualifier from Schlagel High School in Kansas City, Kansas will be able to practice with the team, but will not be eligible for games. Bobby Smith, a transfer from Villanova, will practice with the team but must set out the games under NCAA transfer rules. Southeast on Television: Southeast currently has three games scheduled for television and more be added later. The Southwest Missouri game on Saturday, Dec. 16, will be televised on KFVS-TV beginning at 7 p.m. The Jan. 6 game at Austin Peay will be televised nationally by ESPN beginning at 11 a.m. The Feb. 1 game vs. Austin Peay at the Show Me Center will be televised on Fox Sports South.

Southeast on Radio: Zimmer Radio Group of Cape Girardeau again has radio broadcast rights for Southeast basketball. Mike Legg will handle play-by-play on the broadcasts that will be heard on K-103 FM in Cape Girardeau, KSIM in Sikeston and KWOC in Poplar Bluff. The games can also be heard worldwide on the internet at www.k103fm.com

Gary Garner Radio Show: Gary Garner will be featured on a live radio show each Wednesday, 6 p.m., at the Drury Lodge. The show will be hosted by Mike Legg on KGIR, 1220 AM.
