Mississippi Valley State Men's Basketball Game Notes Fresh off 2-1 performance in Kansas City, Indians travel for first road game of season.

Southeast lost an opening round decision to Toledo but bounced back with wins over Robert Morris and Cleveland State. Southeast's other two wins this season are over Truman State and Missouri-Rolla. Mississippi Valley State is 1-2 after road losses to Oregon and Mississippi State and a home win over Drake. THE COACHES: Gary Garner is 62-30 in his fourth season at Southeast and is 309-194 in his 18th year as a collegiate head coach. Lafayette Stribling is 238-258 in his 18th season at Mississippi Valley State. THE SERIES: Mississippi Valley leads the series 1-0. LAST MEETING: Mississippi Valley State beat the Indians 84-80 in the finals of the 1995 River City Classic Tournament at the Show Me Center. . TOUGH DEFENSE: Last season, Southeast ranked fifth nationally in field goal percentage defense (38%) and 17th nationally in scoring defense (61.6 ppg) . In five games this season, Southeast defenders have allowed opponents to shoot just .386 from the field and .240 from three. Opponents are averaging 61.0 points per game. McCUTHISON MAKES ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Senior Emmanuel McCuthison was named to the all-tournament team in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City. He averaged 15.3 points and four rebounds per game in the three tournament games while shooting 61% from the field, 50% from three and 83% from the line. McCuthison is the early scoring leader in a balanced Southeast attack. He is averaging 15.2 points per game while shooting .558 from the floor, .464 from three and ..833 from the line. SANDERS FROM THREE: Senior guard Amory Sanders, who is the first guard off the bench, is shooting .592\1 from three. He was 7-10 from three in the win over Robert Morris and is 13-28 for the season. ROGERS EARNS PLAYING TIME: Junior college transfer Terry Rogers, 6-10, 280, came off the bench to score 17 points and pull down six rebounds in just 17-minutes of action in the Missouri-Rolla game. He came back to pull down eight rebounds while scoring two points against Toledo , had 7 points and 6 rebounds against Robert Morris and made the game winning free throw while pulling down five rebounds vs. Cleveland State. Rogers is the team rebound leader, averaging 6.0 boards per game. STOKES SOLID: Senior point guard Michael Stokes, ranked by the Sporting News as the 16th best point guard nationally, is averaging 9.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. He is shooting .386 from the field and .300 from three. Stokes leads the team in assists, is second in rebounding and third in scoring. DEMOND BLOCKS CONTINUE: Junior Drew DeMond continues to be a force on defense. Last season in limited playing time, DeMond had 26 blocked shots in 23 games played. After five games this season, DeMond has a team-high eight blocks. SHORT HAS STRONG TOURNEY: Senior guard Antonio Short has raised his averages to 10.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. He had 15 points in the Cleveland State game while hitting 6-8 from the field and 1-2 from three. MORRIS SIDELINED: Senior guard Matt Morris will be sidelined until the first of the year because of mononucleosis. SOUTHEAST PICKED THIRD IN OVC: Southeast has been picked to finish third in the league race in balloting of league coaches and sports information directors. Austin Peay was picked to win the OVC followed by Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech. STOKES PRESEASON ALL-OVC: Senior point guard Michael Stokes was selected first team preseason all-OVC. Ranked as the 16th best point guard in Division I basketball by the Sporting News, Stokes was third team all-OVC and a member of the OVC all-tournament team last season. Antonio Short was selected as honorable mention preseason all-OVC. |
