Tennessee Tech Basketball Notes Southeast to open OVC play this Saturday.

Southeast Missouri State is 5-2 after defeating regional rival Southern Illinois 87-84 on Tuesday night. The Indians captured the consolation championship at the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City. Southeast lost an opening round decision to Toledo but bounced back with wins over Robert Morris and Cleveland State. Southeast's other two wins this season are over Truman State and Missouri-Rolla with the other loss at Mississippi Valley State. THE COACHES: Gary Garner is 63-31 in his fourth season at Southeast and is 310-195 in his 18th year as a collegiate head coach. Garner is 4-2 vs. Tennessee Tech. Jeff Lebo is 30-31 in his third season at Tennessee Tech. Lebo is 1-3 vs. Southeast. THE SERIES: Southeast leads the series 10-8. LAST SEASON: Southeast won both games, winning 84-79 at Tech and 61-50 at the Show Me Center. SOUTHEAST NOTES PERIMETER PRODUCES: Southeast perimiter players Emmanuel McCuthison, Michael Stokes, Antonio Short and Amory Sanders scored 75 of Southeast's 87 points in the win over Southern Illinois. McCuthison had 20 points in the first half on the way to a 29 point effort while Stokes added 19, Short 14 and Sanders 13. The quartet was 21-38 from the field (.552), 12-20 from three (.600) and 21-31 from the line (.677). TOUGH DEFENSE: Last season, Southeast ranked fifth nationally in field goal percentage defense (38%) and 17th nationally in scoring defense (61.6 ppg) . Despite allowing 83 points against Mississippi Valley State last Wednesday, Southeast still leads the OVC in scoring defense and 3-point field goal defense while ranking second in field goal percentage defense. In seven games this season, Southeast defenders have allowed opponents to shoot just .396 from the field and .288 from three. Opponents are averaging 67.4 points per game. SHORT COMES ALIVE: In the last three games, senior guard Antonio Short has averaged 17 points per game while shooing 16-27 (.592) from the field, 6-9 (.667) from three and 13-21 (.619) from the line. Short had a career high 22 points against Mississippi Valley State. All 22 points came in the second half. McCUTHISON RED HOT: Senior Emmanuel McCuthison, who has been in double figures every game this season, had a career high 29 points against Southern Illinois. He sizzled in the first half when he scored 20 points with 6-10 from the field, 4-5 from three and 4-6 from the line. For the game, McCuthison, nicknamed e-mail, was 9-18 from the field, 6-9 from three and 5-8 from the line. Earlier this season, he was named to the all-tournament team in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City. He averaged 15.3 points and four rebounds per game in the three tournament games while shooting 61% from the field, 50% from three and 83% from the line For the season, McCuthison is averaging 16.4 points per game while shooting .506 from the floor, .476 from three and .75 from the line. SANDERS FROM THREE: Senior guard Amory Sanders, who is the first guard off the bench, is shooting .576 from three. He was 7-10 from three in the win over Robert Morris and is 19-33 for the season. Sanders also leads the team in free throw shooting with 12-15 for .800. STOKES SOLID: Senior point guard Michael Stokes, ranked by the Sporting News as the 16th best point guard nationally, is averaging 11 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game Stokes leads the team in assists and steals, and is third in rebounding and scoring. ROGERS AND GORDON START: Junior college transfers Terry Rogers and Monte Gordon made their first starts in the SIU game. Rogers responded with three points and five rebounds while Gordon had two points and two rebounds. Rogers is Southeast's top rebounder with 5.2 per game while averaging 6.3 points per game. Gordon has averaged 3.2 points and 2.2 rebounds while playing an average of 11.8-minutes per game. DEMOND BLOCKS CONTINUE: Junior Drew DeMond continues to be a force on defense. Last season in limited playing time, DeMond had 26 blocked shots in 23 games played. After seven games this season, DeMond has a team-high nine blocks. MORRIS SIDELINED: Senior guard Matt Morris will be sidelined until mid-December because of mononucleosis. SOUTHEAST PICKED THIRD IN OVC: Southeast has been picked to finish third in the league race in balloting of league coaches and sports information directors. Austin Peay was picked to win the OVC followed by Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech. STOKES PRESEASON ALL-OVC: Senior point guard Michael Stokes was selected first team preseason all-OVC. Ranked as the 16th best point guard in Division I basketball by the Sporting News, Stokes was third team all-OVC and a member of the OVC all-tournament team last season. Antonio Short was selected as honorable mention preseason all-OVC. AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast is 3-0 at the Show Me Center this season and is 158-45 (.778) since the Show Me Center opened in 1987. Last season, Southeast again led the OVC in attendance with 5,066 fans per game. After three games this season, Southeast averages 4,980 fans per game.
