Southwest Missouri State Basketball Game Notes Intrastate rivals to meet Saturday night at the Show Me Center.

Television: The game will be televised by KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau and KYTV in Springfield. Steve Sotak and Mike Legg will be the announcers for KFVS-TV. The Indians are 1-0 vs. Missouri Valley teams after defeating regional rival Southern Illinois 87-84 on Dec. 5. The Indians captured the consolation championship at the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City. Southeast lost an opening round decision to Toledo but bounced back with wins over Robert Morris and Cleveland State. Southeast's other two wins this season are over Truman State and Missouri-Rolla. Southwest Missouri is 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bears won their first three games of the season but have lost two straight with a home loss to Tulsa and a road MVC loss to Evansville. THE COACHES: Gary Garner is 63-32 in his fourth season at Southeast and is 310-196 in his 18th year as a collegiate head coach. Barry Henson is 26-13 in his second season at SMS. THE SERIES: Southwest Missouri leads the series 86-52. LAST MEETING: Southwest Missouri State won 67-56 in 1998 at Springfield. McCUTHISON LEADS TEAM IN SCORING AND REBOUNDING.: Senior Emmanuel McCuthison, who has been in double figures every game this season, is the Southeast leader in points and rebounds. He is averaging 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. McCuthison had a career high 29 points against Southern Illinois. Against SIU, McCuthison sizzled in the first half when he scored 20 points with 6-10 from the field, 4-5 from three and 4-6 from the line. For the game, McCuthison, nicknamed e-mail, was 9-18 from the field, 6-9 from three and 5-8 from the line. Earlier this season, he was named to the all-tournament team in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City. He averaged 15.3 points and four rebounds per game in the three tournament games while shooting 61% from the field, 50% from three and 83% from the line INJURIES: Monte Gordon missed the Tennessee Tech because of recurring back problems and is questionable for the Southwest Missouri game. Amory Sanders has a foot contusion and Antonio Short has tendonitis in his knees but both are probable for the SMS game. PERIMETER PRODUCES: Southeast perimeter players Emmanuel McCuthison, Michael Stokes, Antonio Short and Amory Sanders scored 75 of Southeast's 87 points in the win over Southern Illinois. McCuthison had 20 points in the first half on the way to a 29 point effort while Stokes added 19, Short 14 and Sanders 13. The quartet was 21-38 from the field (.552), 12-20 from three (.600) and 21-31 from the line (.677). DEFENSE FALTERS: Last season, Southeast ranked fifth nationally in field goal percentage defense (38%) and 17th nationally in scoring defense (61.6 ppg) . Despite allowing 237 points (79 ppg) in the last three games, Southeast still ranks second in the OVC in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Indians lead the league in 3-point field goal percentage defense. In eight games this season, Southeast defenders have allowed opponents to shoot just .396 from the field and .290 from three. Opponents are averaging 67.8 points per game. SHORT COMES ALIVE: In the last three games, senior guard Antonio Short has averaged 16 points per game. Short had a career high 22 points against Mississippi Valley State. All 22 points came in the second half. SANDERS FROM THREE: Senior guard Amory Sanders, who is the first guard off the bench, is shooting .440 from three. He was 7-10 from three in the win over Robert Morris and is 22-50 for the season. STOKES SOLID: Senior point guard Michael Stokes, ranked by the Sporting News as the 16th best point guard nationally, is averaging 11.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game Stokes leads the team in assists and steals, and is third in rebounding and scoring. DEMOND BLOCKS CONTINUE: Junior Drew DeMond continues to be a force on defense. Last season in limited playing time, DeMond had 26 blocked shots in 23 games played. After eight games this season, DeMond has a team-high nine blocks. MORRIS SIDELINED: Senior guard Matt Morris will be sidelined until mid-December because of mononucleosis. SOUTHEAST PICKED THIRD IN OVC: Southeast has been picked to finish third in the league race in balloting of league coaches and sports information directors. Austin Peay was picked to win the OVC followed by Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech. STOKES PRESEASON ALL-OVC: Senior point guard Michael Stokes was selected first team preseason all-OVC. Ranked as the 16th best point guard in Division I basketball by the Sporting News, Stokes was third team all-OVC and a member of the OVC all-tournament team last season. Antonio Short was selected as honorable mention preseason all-OVC. AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast is 3-1 at the Show Me Center this season and is 158-46 (.778) since the Show Me Center opened in 1987. Last season, Southeast again led the OVC in attendance with 5,066 fans per game. After four games this season, Southeast averages 4,970 fans per game. NEXT : Southeast will host the Campbell Camels on Wednesday, Dec. 20. |
