Calvin Williams Named OVC Newcomer of the Week

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Monday, December 10, 2007) - The Ohio Valley Conference announced that 6-9 sophomore Calvin Williams was voted as Co-Newcomer of the Week as voted by conference sports information directors. Williams shared the weekly honor with Tennessee-Martin's Djero Riedewald. This is the second time that Williams has garnered this honor this season, he was named OVC Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 26. Williams, a native of Memphis, Tennessee averaged a double-double with 15.5 ppg and 11.0 rpg in helping the Redhawks (6-4, 2-0 OVC) open the OVC season 2-0, the first time the program has kicked-off the OVC schedule 2-0 since the 1999-2000 NCAA Tournament season. In the Redhawks 102-95 home victory over Tennessee State on Thursday, Williams finished with 16 points on 6-12 shooting from the field. He recorded a game-high 12 rebounds, including nine from the defensive end of the court. He also added a game-high three blocks and recorded one steal in 23 minutes of work. Two days later Williams recorded his team-leading fourth double-double of the season in a convincing 84-74 victory over Tennessee Tech, snapping the Redhawks ten-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles. Williams finished with 15 points on 4-6 shooting from the field and 7-8 shooting from the charity stripe. He pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds with five coming on the offensive end. He also added two blocks and two steals as well as holding All-OVC forward Amadi McKenzie to only nine points. For the week Williams hit 55.5 percent (10-18) of his shots from the field. Williams is averaging 10.3 ppg for the season which ranks fourth on the team. His 8.1 rpg leads the team and ranks fourth in the OVC. He also ranks third in the OVC with 16 blocked shots. Williams and the Redhawks will have 10-day layoff for finals week before hitting the road for their Alabama roadtrip. They face Samford on Tuesday, December 18 in Birmingham, Alabama.
