The Teams: Southeast is 1-7 with a victory over North Alabama and losses to Birmingham-Southern, Southwest Missouri State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Western Illinois, Vanderbilt, Saint Louis and Mississippi Valley State. The Indians are 0-3 on the road and 1-4 at home. Southeast was 18-12 overall, 8-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference last season. Southern Illinois is coming off a 18-point loss to Colorado State Tuesday night. They are 8-2 and ranked 27th nationally in the AP poll. The Salukis are 3-0 at the SIU Arena.

The Series: Southern Illinois leads the long series that began in 1914, 62-45.

Last Season: Southeast defeated the Salukis 87-84 at the Show Me Center.

The Coaches: Gary Garner is 77-48 in his fifth season at Southeast. He is 324-212 in his 19th season as a collegiate head coach. Garner is 7-8 vs, Southern Illinois, 6-6 at Drake and 1-2 at Southeast. Bruce Weber is 59-40 in his fourth season at SIU. He is 2-1 vs. Southeast Missouri.

Southeast Basketball Notes

Winans Leads Scorers: Redshirt freshman Derek Winans, who had 21 points Monday night vs. Mississippi Valley State, leads the Indians in scoring with 16.4 points per game. He was honored as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26 and Dec. 3. The graduate of Shawnee High School in Southern Illinois, leads Southeast in scoring and assists and is third in rebounding. Winans had a career high 29 points against Arkansas-Little Rock. He was 11-18 from the field, 4-8 from three and 3-3 from the line. Winans ranks 7th in OVC scoring and 3rd in OVC assist to turnover ratio.

Scheer Leads In Rebounding: Junior Tim Scheer leads the team in rebounding with 6.0 per game and is second on the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game. He is the team's top 3-point shooter with 13-31 for .419. Scheer had a career high 23 points against North Alabama when he was 8-16 from the field, 2-6 from three and 5-6 from the line. He also had eight rebounds.

DeMond Blocks: DeMond is the active OVC career leader in blocked shots with 90. He had 26 blocks as a freshman, 48 as a sophomore and has 16 already this season. He had a season-high five blocks vs. Vanderbilt. DeMond, who missed the first game of the season with a finger injury, averages 7.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Hale Scores Career High 22 vs. Vandy: True freshman Brett Hale started at the point guard position in the first six games. Hale, who had a collegiate career high of 22 points against Vanderbilt, was selected as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 10. He averages 8.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

King Shines vs. Vandy: Demetrius King had 17 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals against the Commodores of the Southeastern Conference. He was 7-11 from the field and 2-2 from the line. King averages 9.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game

Hence Has Career High vs. MVSU: Sophomore Damarcus Hence scored a career high 15 points in Monday night's loss to Mississippi Valley State. He was 6-12 from the field, 1-3 from three and 2-2 from the lien. He also had a career high five rebounds. For the season, Hence averages 6.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.

Johnson Has Solid Debut: Junior college transfer Kenny Johnson who became eligible just prior to the Saint Louis game, was in the starting lineup for his Southeast debut, and responded with seven points, five assists and two rebounds. In his second game, Johnson was scoreless, but handed out six assists.

Gordon Slowed by Racing Heart: Senior Monte Gordon, who was academically ineligible the first semester, will have his return slowed by continuing problems with a racing heart. His medical status is day-to-day. Gordon was hospitalized for tests last Friday and Saturday and is not expected to see any action for Southeast until after the holiday break at the earliest.

Tough Start: The 1-7 start is the worst since Southeast started the 1950-51 season 0-9. Two of those nine losses were to SIU.

Smith Will Redshirt: Justin Smith, a transfer from Arkansas State, could have become eligibile for the second semester this season, but coach Gary Garner has decided to redshirt Smith.

Walk-on Shaw Leaves Team: Walk-on David Shaw of Waltonville, Ill., has decided to leave the basketball team. He joined the team just prior to the first exhibition game and left the team prior to the SLU game. He appeared in just two games.

Co-Captains: Juniors Drew DeMond and Tim Scheer will act as co-captains for the 2001-2002 season. They are both two-year letter winners at Southeast.

OVC Honors: 11-26 - Derek Winans, Rookie of the Week 12-3 - Derek Winans, Rookie of the Week 12-10 - Brett Hale, Rookie of the Week

At The Show Me Center: Southeast is 166-53 (.761) in games played at the Show Me Center. The facility opened in 1987.

Winning Tradition: Only 42 of the nation's 311 Division I basketball teams have won more games over the last three years than Southeast Missouri. The Indians have 63 wins over the last three seasons.

Early Signing: Southeast signed one player during the early signing period that began on Nov. 14. Cole Grapperhaus, 6-8 junior from Breese Mater Dei High School in Breese, Ill., has signed a national letter of intent to attend Southeast in the fall of 2002. Grapperhaus averaged 15 points and 6 rebounds per game last season for the Mater Dei team that was 23-10 and advanced to the Illinois sectional finals.

Holiday Break: Southeast players will be released after the Southern Illinois game on Saturday and will return to campus for a practice on the evening of Dec. 26. The Indians will host Lincoln on Saturday, Dec. 29, 1 p.m. at the Show Me Center.

Next Game: Southeast will host Lincoln University on Dec. 29, 1 p.m., at the Show Me Center. The Indians begin 2002 with games at Western Illinois on Jan. 2 and Eastern Illinois on Jan. 5.
