Men's Basketball To Tangle With Blue Tigers Of Lincoln University Team will look to get back on winning track

Lincoln is 5-6 with wins over Morningside, Central Missouri, Missouri Western, Truman State and BYU-Hawaii and losses to Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Missouri Rolla, Columbia, Hawaii-Hilo and Hawaii Pacific. The Blue Tigers, who average 88 points per game, have several Division I transfers including leading scorer Kenny Dye, a transfer from Nevada-Las Vegas and leading rebounder Tedrell Jones, a transfer from New Mexico State. The Series: Southeast leads the series 26-20 with both teams formerly members of the MIAA. The teams last met in 1991 with Southeast winning 85-78 in Jefferson City. They last met at the Show Me Center in 1990 with Southeast winning 74-65. The Coaches: Gary Garner is 77-49 in his fifth season at Southeast. He is 324-212 in his 19th season as a collegiate head coach. Bill Pope is 37-79 in his fifth season as head coach at Lincoln. Southeast Basketball Notes Winans Leads Scorers: Redshirt freshman Derek Winans, who had a career high 29 points vs. Arkansas-Little Rock, leads Southeast in scoring and assists. He averages 15.0 points and 2.8 assists per game. Winans was honored as the OVC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26 and Dec. 3. Scheer Second in Scoring and Rebounding: Junior Tim Scheer has been solid with 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, both second on the team. He leads the team in 3-point shooting with 14-37 for .376. Scheer had a career high 23 points against North Alabama. DeMond Blocks: Drew DeMond is the active OVC career leader in blocked shots with 90. He had 26 blocks as a freshman, 48 as a sophomore and 18 this season. He had a season-high five blocks vs. Vanderbilt. DeMond leads the Indians in rebounding with 6.4 per game. Hale Top Free Throw Shooter: True freshman Brett Hale has hit 16-17 free throws for a team leading .941 from the line. He averages 9.4 points per game. Hale had a career high 22 points vs. Vanderbilt. He was the OVC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 10. Johnson Assists: Kenny Johnson, who became eligible at the end of the first semester has 16 assists in just three games played for an average of 5.3 per game. Johnson, who averages 7.0 points per game, had a career high six assists vs. Mississippi Valley State. Hence Has Career High vs. MVSU: Sophomore Damarcus Hence, who missed the first three games this season, scored a career high 15 points in the Mississippi Valley State game. He was 6-12 from the field, 1-3 from three and 2-2 from the line. Hampered by foul trouble, Hence did not score against SIU. He averages 5.5 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. King Off the Bench: Junior Demetrius King has been instant offense off the bench. He averages 10.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. King had a career high 17 points and nine rebounds at Vanderbilt. He had 15 points against Southern Illinois. Gordon Slated for Action vs. Lincoln: Senior Monte Gordon, who was academically ineligible the first semester, is slated for his first action of the season in the Lincoln game. He has been slowed by a racing heart that forced him to be hospitalized on Dec. 14 and 15. Gordon averaged 3.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in just 11 games played last season. Crader Has Bad Back: Freshman center Adam Crader missed the SIU game because of a pulled muscle in his back. He is expected to be available for the Lincoln game. Tough Start: This year's 1-8 start is the worst since Southeast started the 1950-51 season 0-9. Smith Will Redshirt: Justin Smith, a transfer from Arkansas State, could have become eligible for the second semester this season, but coach Gary Garner has decided to redshirt Smith. Co-Captains: Juniors Drew DeMond and Tim Scheer are co-captains for the 2001-2002 season. They are both two year letter winners. OVC Honors: 11-26 - Derek Winans, Rookie of the Week 12-3 - Derek Winans, Rookie of the Week 12-6 - Brett Hale, Rookie of the Week At The Show Me Center: Southeast is 166-53 (.761) in games played at the Show Me Center which opened in 1987. Winning Tradition: Only 42 of the nation's 311 Division I basketball teams won more games over the last three seasons than Southeast Missouri. The Indians had 63 wins over the last three years. Holiday Break: Southeast players went home after the Southern Illinois game and will return to campus for a practice on the evening of Dec. 26. SID Streak: Ron Hines, Southeast sports information director has worked 613 consecutive basketball games at Southeast, the longest streak in Division I basketball. He has not missed a game since 1980. Next Game: Southeast will play Western Illinois in Macomb on Jan. 2 and will open OVC play at Eastern Illinois on Jan. 5. |
