McGuire was the defensive coordinator at St. Norbert College in 2005 after serving 12 seasons at Indiana State, from 1993-2004. McGuire served as the defensive coordinator for the Sycamores before becoming the head coach prior to the 1998 campaign. In his five seasons as defensive coordinator, McGuire's defensive units recorded three shutouts and 10 games in which the opposition was held under 10 points. His 1994 squad was first among the Gateway Conference in total defense and ranked 17th nationally.

In the same season, McGuire's team dropped a tough decision to Division I-A Ball State, 23-21.

Prior to McGuire's duty as head coach at Indiana State, he served as a collegiate head coach at Morningside College in Iowa from 1981-82. He served as an assistant coach at Navy, Northern Illinois, Kansas State, and Nebraska-Omaha.
