Final Stats

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (August 29, 2002) - The Southeast Football Team won its season opener tonight against the Boll Weavils of Arnasas Monticello by the score of 42-41 in dramatic fashion as in double overtime the defense blocked an extra point and senior running back Keike Misipeka ran for a 25-yard touchdown to secure the win. The win was the first ever for Southeast over UAM.

The game was back and forth as each team had an answer for the other after a score. The first quarter was scoreless, but both teams scored twice in the second as Bill Coleman scored on a 30-yard pass from quarterback Jeff East and running back Corey Kinsey scored on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Jeromy McDowell.

Both teams were scoreless in the third quarter but busted out in the fourth to score 21 points each. McDowell had touchdown passes of 31 and 16 yards to Willie Ponder and Chris NeSmith, respectively. Kinsey ran in a 17 yard rush for a touchdown to tie the score at 35 a piece going into overtime.

Both teams went scoreless in the first extra period, but UAM running back Corwin Elliott punched in a 1-yard run to put the Weavils up by one. The touchdown tied a school record for TD's in a career. However, the Tribe's defense stepped up and blocked the UAM extra point attempt.

As the Tribe took their turn they stood down by six points. On the first play from scrimmage, Misipeka took the ball up the left side and dived in for the score. Kicker Derek Kutz would put the finishing touches on the game as he booted home the game winning point.

While the Southeast defense turned out to be the hero of the game, it gave up 622 yards from scrimmage and 484 of that in the air. They allowed 29 first downs to UAM, which was a school record.

Kinsey rushed for 180 yards and one touchdown as McDowell through for three TD's and 147 yards. Ponder had 116 yards receiving. UAM's quarterback Ford Leonard threw for 484 yards and three touchdowns. Shamar Brown had 206 yards receiving while Marvin Brown had 127. Southeast was penalized 16 times for 123 yards. They threw four interceptions.

Southeast next goes to Southern Illinois on September 7 to take on the Salukis. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
