Southern Illinois Beats Southeast Missouri 28-7

Sept. 6, 2003

Box Score

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southern Illinois moved to 2-0 on the season with a convincing 28-7 win over nationally ranked Southeast Missouri in front of a Houck Stadium record crowd of 11,100.

The Salukis got two first half touchdowns from Mohammed Abdulqaadir who scored on a 22-yard run in the first quarter and a five yard run with just 35-seconds remaining in the half. He had 91 yards rushing in 15 carries before leaving the game with an injury in the third quarter.

Trailing 14-0, Southeast Missouri threatened to get back in the game, mounting a long drive that resulted in a first and goal at the two. But Southeast could not score in four plays and Southern Illinois dominated the rest of the game.

Saluki quarterback Joel Sambursky scored on a five-yard run that capped a 97-yard touchdown drive after Southeast failed to score. Fullback Brandon Robinson threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Courtney Abbott to close out the SIU scoring.

Southeast finally scored its first touchdown of the season on the final play of the game when Jeromy McDowell threw a 5-yard scoring pass to freshman wide receiver Antonio Scaife.

"We have some really good football players, but right now we are just not a good team," said Southeast coach Tim Billings. "We are struggling with an identity on offense."
