CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (September 16, 2000) - Southeast Missouri State University defeated nationally ranked Illinois State 28-25, Saturday night at Houck Stadium. Despite only racking up 167 total yards of offense, Southeast found creative ways to score as it got two defensive touchdowns and another touchdown off a fake punt.

Illinois State struck first when quarterback Kevin Glenn found Garry Davis on a fade pattern in the corner of the endzone to make the score 7-0. Southeast would respond quickly as Isaac Huddleston intercepted a Glenn pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown to even the score at 7-7.

Before the end of the first half, Southeast Quarterback Bobby Brune ran five yards into the endzone to give Southeast a 14-7 lead and close the scoring for the half.

The third quarter saw Southeast Head Coach Tim Billings go to his bag of tricks with a fake punt. Wide receiver Curtis Cooper took the snap and scampered 55 yards to paydirt to give Southeast a 21-7 lead.

Illinois State would get a safety off a bad Southeast punt and then running back Willie Watts broke a Southeast tackle and rushed 34 yards to the endzone to bring Illinois State within five at 21-16.

But once again the Southeast defense would bail out the anemic Indian offense as Rodney Woodall picked up a Glenn fumble and rumbled 80 yards to make the score 28-16 in favor of Southeast.

Illinois State would add a safety and a Steve Kostro 52 yard touchdown reception from Glenn to pull within five at 28-23, but as the clock ran down, Huddleston picked off his second pass of the game to end the Redbirds attack and give the Indians its second victory of the season.
