Southwest Missouri Beats Southeast Missouri 17-10

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State fell to 0-4 on the season with a 17-10 loss to in-state rival Southwest Missouri State. SMS took advantage of four Southeast Missouri turnovers to move to 2-1 on the season. Southeast Missouri took the early lead on a five-yard run by David Taufoou who had 107 yards rushing on the night. His TD run capped an 89-yard drive in 13 plays with the Indians going up 7-0 with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter. SMS came back to tie the game on a five-yard run by Cody Pratt with just 15-seconds remaining in the first quarter. Jovon Lewis' 43 yard interception return of a pass from Southeast quarterback Jeromy McDowell put the Bears on top for good with 14:50 remaining in the second quarter. SMS added insurance points with 7:07 remaining in the game when John Scifres kicked a 29-yard field goal after a fumble recovery gave the Bears the ball at the Southeast 38 yard line. Southeast battled back with a 27-yard field goal from Derek Kutz with 1:25 remaining, but the Bears recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock. The Indians 365 yards in total offense while holding SMS to 249 yards. Southeast, the preseason favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference, opens league play next Saturday at Samford. |
