Indians Rout Tigers In Their First OVC Match Of The Season

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (October 5, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State football team won an impressive game tonight as they dominated the Tigers of Tennessee State 49-25. Southeast now moves to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in OVC play. Tennessee State moves to 1-5 and 0-1 in the conference.

Southeast got on the board first as Chris NesSmith returned a Tennessee State punt 44 yards for a touchdown to make the score 7-0.

Neither team scored again until 10:47 left in the second quarter as Keiki Misipeka capped off a 55 yard scoring drive with a one yard dive into the end zone, giving the Tribe a 14-0 lead.

Southeast got on the board again as quarterback Jack Tomco hit Tariq Simpson for a 39-yard strike to make the score 21-0.

The Tribe made the score 28-0 on a 44-yard strike from Tomco to Willie Ponder with 6:52 left in the half. Kutz followed with the extra point and the Tribe took a 28-0 lead into the half.

TSU got on the board in the third quarter as running back Charles Anthony ran for a one yard score. The drive was 13 plays for 72 yards and took 4:06 off the clock. The Tigers missed the extra point but closed the gap to 28-6.

The Tigers scored again really quick on another Anthony run as he marched 18 yards for the score. The Tigers tried for the extra point, but failed on the conversion. TSU scored again as Carlos right took an 82-yard pass from Tiger quarterback Dwayne Buchanan. The Tigers, again, missed the two-point conversion and the score stood Southeast, 28, TSU 18.

Southeast scored for the first time in the second half as NesSmith took a 20 yard pass from Tomco and capped off a 10 play, 65 yard scoring drive. Kutz added the extra point and Southeast led 42-18.

TSU got its last score of the game as Anthony took a 44-yard pass from Buchanan and kicker Joey Hudak added the extra point to make the score 42-25.

Southeast put the final touches on the win as Iven Brown took a six-yard run into the endzone capping a 10 play, 69 yard scoring drive. Kutz finished the drive with his seventh extra point of the game.

Southeast had 26 first downs to TSU's 18. The Indians threw for 303 yards and rushed for 212 for a total of 486. The Tribe had the ball for 34 minutes to TSU's 25.

Mike Miller and Ricky Farmer led the Tribe in tackles with 10 apiece. Alex Alameda and Kellin White both had interceptions. Ryan Roth and James Jennette both had three sacks and John Paul Usrey and Jermaine Motley had one each.

The Tribe was led by Tomco who threw for 300 yards with four touchdowns. Corey Kinsey had 77 yards rushing and Misipeka had 48. Ponder had eight receptions for 121 yards and Simpson had eight for 103.

Southeast now goes on the road next weekend for an OVC match up with the University of Tennessee at Martin. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. The game will be homecoming for the Skyhawks.
