CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -

With 14 years experience as a collegiate assistant coach, Mike Chavez has been hired as offensive line coach at Southeast Missouri State University.

Chavez replaces Greg Olejack who resigned to take a scouting job with the Kansas City Chiefs.

A 1981 graduate of Whittier College in California, Chavez comes to Southeast from Black Hills State University where he had served as offensive line coach since 1996. At Black Hills State, Chavez coached under head coach Russ Martin who joined the Southeast staff this spring as offensive coordinator.

"I feel very fortunate to get a veteran coach like Chavez," said Southeast head coach Tim Billings. "He has been in college coaching for a number of years and is a great technician. The fact that he worked with Coach Martin the last four years is certainly a plus for us. He knows our offense and what is expected."

Chavez, who began his duties on July 24, has also been an assistant coach at Whittier College, Riverside Community College and Rio Hondo Community College.

He served as head coach at La Puente High School in La Puente, Calif. from 1983-85 and as an assistant coach at Salesian High School in Los Angeles and San Gabriel High School in San Gabriel, Calif.
