By Tyler Koonce, Assistant Football Contact

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State football players participated in their second game-like scrimmage at Houck Stadium on Saturday night. Early on, the defense stood out and made some big plays and down the stretch the offense was able to score a couple touchdowns.

Defensively, Nick Stauffer (Mansfield, Texas/Summit) had two sacks while Adam Casper (Anna, Ill./Anna-Jonesboro) and Hannibal Vaivao (Long Beach, Calif./East Los Angeles CC) were each credited with one. Kendall Magana (Arlington, Texas/Lamar) also recovered a fumble. Patrick Maloney (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) and Casper both made big hits on ball carriers early in the session.

On the offensive side, quarterbacks Houston Lillard (Oakland, Calif./Laney CC) and Victor Anderson (East St. Louis, Ill./Mesa CC) split time with the first team offense. Steve Callanan (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) and Jared Van Slyke (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) also received considerable time at quarterback. Lillard threw a touchdown pass across the middle to tight end Ben Gugler (Salina, Kan./Butler CC) and Van Slyke hit fullback Nick Grassi (Wilsonville, Ore./Wilsonville) on a play-action rollout for a touchdown.

The Redhawks begin classes on Monday and will practice every afternoon leading up to the season opener on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Cincinnati. The game will begin at 6 p.m. central time and will be televised by ESPN360. The home opener will be against Southwest Baptist at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 from Houck Stadium.
