CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - TEAM ELECTS CAPTAINS: Team captains were elected on Sunday. Kevin Ballatore and Oge Oge will serve as offensive captains while Seth Harrell and Edgar Jones will be defensive captains. GAME TYPE SCRIMMAGE: The Redhawks will have a game type scrimmage on Saturday, 6 p.m., at Houck Stadium. It will be a dress rehearsal for the season opener on Sept. 2. SEASON OPENER IS SEPT. 2: The Redhawks open the 2006 season on the road at Austin Peay. Game time at Governors Stadium in Clarksville, Tenn., will be 6 p.m. Austin Peay was 2-9 last season. The Govs will return to the OVC for football next season. They have been competing in the non-scholarship Pioneer League. Veteran running back Chris Fletcher had 10 carries for 81 yards, but the Govs offense lost five fumbles during the scrimmage. The Governors will scrimmage again on Tuesday. HOME OPENER IS SEPT. 9: The opening home game will Saturday, Sept. 9, 6 p.m., vs. Missouri-Rolla. It will be magnet night with everyone attending receiving a magnet schedule from Montgomery Bank. Kohlfeld Distributing and Montgomery Bank are the game sponsors. There will be free tailgating beginning at 4 p.m. with beverages provided by Kohlfeld Distributing and Pepsi. Missouri-Rolla was 7-4 last season including a 45-3 win over Austin Peay. The Miners open their season on Saturday at Tiffin University in Ohio. Tiffin is picked to win the Division II Great Lakes Football Conference while the Miners are picked to finish third. COWAN LEAVES: Redshirt freshman quarterback William Cowan has left the team and returned to his home in California. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN: Senior punter David Simonhoff was named a first team preseason All-American by The Sports Network and I-AA.org. Simonhoff was a first team All-America pick by the American Football Coaches Association after last season when he again led the OVC in punting. Simonhoff has averaged 43.6 yards per punt during his previous three seasons at Southeast. In 2004 he established a new Southeast and OVC individual season record when he averaged 46 yards per punt. He has three punts of 80 yards or more and seven punts of 70 yards or more. PRESEASON ALL-OVC: Simonhoff was a preseason all-OVC choice for the second straight year. He was joined on the preseason all-OVC team by sophomore kicker Colin Schermann and senior defensive end Edgar Jones. Oge Oge RETURNS: Oge Oge, who redshirted last season, is back for his senior season. He was a starter in 2004 when had 33 catches for 426 yards and three TD's. THREE ANDERSON'S, THREE JONES': The Redhawks roster includes three players with the last name of Anderson and three with the last name of Jones. None are related. The Andersons include Marvin Anderson of Willingboro, New Jersey, Robert Anderson of Hillsboro, Mo., and Tony Anderson of Arlington, Texas. The three Jones players include Clint Jones of Mesquite, Texas, Edgar Jones of Rayville, La., and Todshon Jones of Atco, New Jersey. BIG RED II: Coach Tony Samuel is a former player and coach at Nebraska and he has five former Nebraska players on his coaching staff. Former Cornhuskers joining Samuel (1981) at Southeast include defensive coordinator Tim McGuire (1975), Lorenzo Brinkley (1993), Kenny Wilhite (1992), Chris Norris (1997) and Brian Boerboom (1992). Graduate assistant coach Justin Kramer is a graduate of SIU-Carbondale but his father was a teammate of Samuel at Nebraska. HARPER HAS CONNECTIONS: New Mexico State transfer Stevelan Harper began his collegiate career playing for Redhawks offensive coordinator Vincent White at St. Mary's College. When the school dropped football he joined Coach Tony Samuel's team at New Mexico State and when Samuel took over at Southeast, he joined the Redhawks for his senior season. REDHAWKS ADD ST. LOUIS RADIO STATION: The Southeast Missouri Football Radio Network has added 1380 ESPN Radio in St. Louis. The network, operated by Mississippi River Radio will be anchored by 100,000-watt K-103 FM in Cape Girardeau. Other network stations include KSIM, Sikeston; KWOC, Poplar Bluff and KMAL, Malden. Erik Sean will be the play-by-play voice of Redhawks football with former quarterback Rick Wieser adding commentary for home games and Ron Hines, Sports Information Director, handling commentary on road games. Todd Bonacki will be a sideline reporter for home games. LIVE VIDEO STREAMING: For the first time ever, Southeast fans will be able to watch Redhawks football on the internet through the Ohio Valley Conference's new premium Web site, OVCSports.TV. OVCSports.TV can be accessed by logging on the OVC Web site, www.ovcsports.com, and is made possible through a partnership with XOS Technologies, a leading provider of sports technology. Subscriptions will be available on an annual, seasonal and per-event basis. In addition to the game video, the weekly television show Redhawks Football with Tony Samuel will also be available on-line. CSS WILL TELEVISE JACKSONVILLE STATE GAME: The Redhawks game at Jacksonville State on Sept. 16 will be televised by CSS which goes into over 4.1-million homes in the southern United States. Charter Cable is working on a plan that could bring the telecast to the Cape Girardeau area. REDHAWKS FOOTBALL WITH Tony Samuel: Samuel will have a weekly 30-minute television show on Heartland's CW, WQWQ-TV. The show will air at 11 p.m. on Fridays and will be hosted by KFVS-TV and The CW sports director Todd Richards. The show, which will debut on Friday, Sept. 1, will also be shown on Charter Cable Channel 11 on Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. GAME DAY DRESSING ROOM: The game-day dressing room for the Redhawks will be in the Student Recreation Center South with the team entering the stadium from the east end. Previously the game-day dressing room was in Houck Field House with entry from the west end of the stadium. ROSTER ADDITIONS: There have been several roster additions.
