THE TEAMS: Southeast is 1-1 after a tough 16-12 road loss at I-A Eastern Michigan and a 24-5 home win over Southern Illinois.

SMS is 1-1 after a 24-10 loss at Kansas and a 28-6 lightning shortened win over Midwestern State.

THE COACHES: Tim Billings, a former assistant at Marshall, Missouri and Oklahoma, is 4-9 in his second season at Southeast Missouri. He is 0-1 vs. SMS.

Randy Ball is 11-13 in his third season at SMS and is 75-54-1 in his 12th year as a collegiate head coach.

THE SERIES: This will be the 69th meeting between the two area rivals. SMS leads the long series 40-28. Since Southeast moved to Division I-AA in 1991, SMS leads the series 4-1.

LAST SEASON: Southwest Missouri won 24-7 at Springfield. The Bears 14-0 after one quarter, 14-7 at the half and 21-7 going into the final quarter.

Jason Ringena rushed for a career high 222 yards for the Bears.

BROTHER VS. BROTHER: The Southeast vs. SMS game will pit brother against brother with senior linebacker P.J. Jones starting for the Bears while freshman defensive end Adam Jones starts for the Indians.

The Jones brothers both played high school football at North County High School. They are the sons of Phillip and Debbie Jones.

LAST WEEK: Southeast got a record passing performance from redshirt freshman quarterback Jeromy McDowell on the way to a 24-5 win over regional rival Southern Illinois.

McDowell established new Southeast records for passing yards in a game with 391 as the Indians established a new single game passing record with 418 yards through the air.

The game was tied 3-3 at the half, but the Indians dominated in the second half as McDowell threw three touchdown passes with two to Tarik Simpson and one to Willie Ponder.

Southwest Missouri had its home opener against Midwestern State delayed by over two hours by lightning. After play resumed the Bears roared to a 28-7 lead before the game was ended because of lightning in the third quarter by mutual consent of both coaches.

SOUTHEAST VS. GATEWAY: Southeast was 2-1 vs. Gateway Conference teams last season with wins over SIU and Illinois State and a loss to Southwest Missouri. This season, Southeast is 1-0 vs. Gateway teams.

McDOWELL OVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: McDowell has been tabbed the OVC Newcomer of the Week after his record setting passing performance against SIU.

McDowell had a sensational second half, completing 14-23 passes for 317 yards and three TD's. For the game he was 19-42 for 391 yards and was intercepted twice.

For the season, McDowell 36-77 for 613 yards and four TD's

In the opener at Eastern Michigan, McDowell completed 17-35 passes for 222 yards and one TD while being intercepted once.

McDowell leads the OVC in total offense with 281 yards per game and ranks second is passing with an average of 18 completions per game.

McDowell threw for 23 touchdowns while completing 63% of his passes two seasons ago at North County High School in Bonne Terre. The 23 TD passes in a season ranks as the ninth best ever by a Missouri high school player. He was a three-time all-state selection.

Seniors Rashad West, who has been hampered by a knee injury, and Bob Brune backup McDowell.

Brune was 1-1 for 27 yards against SIU and now has 3.422 yards passing in his fourth season at Southeast.

West has thrown for 1,828 yards and rushed for 677 yards in his two seasons at Southeast.

EAST HONORED BY OVC: Junior punter Kyle East was named co-winner of the OVC Special Teams Player of the Week award.

East had five punts for an average of 46.2 yards per punt with a long punt of 62 yards.

SOUTHEAST IN NCAA STATS: The Indians rank high nationally in two statistical categories. The passing offense ranks fifth nationally and first in the OVC with 320 yards per game. In pass efficiency defense, Southeast ranks 13th nationally and first in the OVC.

NEW RECEIVERS LEAD OVC: Junior college transfers Adrian Sanders and Willie Ponder dominate OVC receiving stats.

Sanders and Ponder are tied for first in receptions per game with 6.5. Sanders leads the OVC and ranks ninth nationally in receiving yards per game with 130.5 while Ponder is second in the OVC and 12th nationally with 120.5 yards per game.

Ponder ranks third in the OVC in all purpose yards with 150.5 per game while Sanders is fifth with 130 yards per game.

DEFENSIVE TURNAROUD: After allowing opponents to score an average of 36.6 points per game, the 2001 Indian defense has allowed just one touchdown in the first two games this season.

Southeast has allowed just 21 points in two games to rank second in the OVC in points allowed per game with 10.5

Southeast leads the OVC in interceptions with four.

FRESHMAN KICKERS: Southeast kicking duties are being handled by a pair of true freshmen. Derek Kutz is kicking PAT's and field goals while Brian Emmendorfer kicks off.

Kutz, who is 3-4 in field goals and 3-3 in extra points, ranks ninth nationally and second in the OVC with an average of 1.5 field goals per game.

He holds five Missouri high school records including 52-52 PAT's last season, the best career PAT percentage with 98-99, 93 straight PAT's and 28 career field goals. He is tied for the state record for kicking points with 81 last season. His long field goal in high school was 46 yards.

Emmendorfer has two of the longest field goals in Missouri high school history, 57 and 58 yards.

YOUNG SQUAD: The current Indian squad has 47 freshman and sophomores on the 76 man squad. There are 37 freshmen including redshirt freshmen and 9 sophomores. There are 19 juniors and only 11 seniors.

Only two starters on offense (center West McKee and tackle Justen Meyer) and three starters on defense (tackle James Jennette, and defensive backs Leotis Belcher and Isaac Huddleston) were a part of the Southeast football program when Billings became head coach.

INJURIES: Defensive back Isaac Huddleston missed the SIU game with an ankle injury but is probable this week.

Junior defensive tackle Jermaine Motley suffered a sprained knee in the Eastern Michigan game and saw only limited playing time against SIU. He is probable for the Southwest Missouri game.

Junior defensive end Ryan Roth is recovering from foot surgery and is out indefinitely.

ROBINSON CLEARED TO PLAY: Freshman offensive tackle Taurean Robinson has been cleared to play this season.

Robinson, 6-4, 300, who played in the win over Southern Illinois, will be a backup at both offensive tackle positions. He missed the season opener because he had not been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Last season he was a member of the Alabama 6-A state championship team from Hoover High School in Birmingham, Ala.

SIX CAPTAINS SELECTED: The Indian squad has elected six captains for the 2001 season.

Serving as offensive captains will be senior running back Curtis Cooper and junior wide receivers Willie Ponder and Adrian Sanders.

Defensive captains will be junior linemen James Jennette and Jermaine Motley along with sophomore linebacker Ricky Farmer.

BROTHERS: The Southeast defensive line could have two Motleys. Junior defensive tackle Jermaine Motley is a returning starter in the defensive line while his younger brother, sophomore Jeremy Motley, will battle for playing time at defensive end. Jeremy, 6-4, 260, was a quarterback in high school.

UNCLES: Former NFL standout Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions is the uncle of Southeast wide receiver Adrian Sanders. Barry Sanders attended last Saturday's game at Eastern Michigan.

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is the uncle of Southeast defensive back Marco Tipton. Holyfield attended last year's Southeast game at Tennessee State and talked to the team in the dressing room after the game.

ACADEMIC HONORS: Five members of the football team have been honored as members of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Alex Alameda, Andy Dunaway, Mike Gross, Chuck McElroy and Justen Meyer were honored for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

PRESEASON ALL-OVC: Senior linebacker Corey Mathis, who ranked 16th nationally in tackles for losses last season, has been named to the preseason all-OVC football team. Junior defensive lineman Jermaine Motley, senior running back Curtis Cooper and sophomore offensive guard Eugene Amano were named honorable mention preseason all-OVC.

SIX HOME GAMES: Southeast will have six home games at Houck Stadium beginning with regional rivals Southern Illinois on Sept. 8 and Southwest Missouri on Sept. 15. Tennessee-Martin will be the Family Weekend foe on Oct. 6 and Murray State will be the homecoming opponent on Oct. 20. Eastern Kentucky will be at Houck on Nov. 3 and the Indians close the regular season at home against Quincy on Nov. 10. All home games begin at 6 p.m. except the homecoming game that will kickoff at 1 p.m.
