THE TEAMS: Southeast is 1-2 after a 16-12 road loss at I-A Eastern Michigan, a 24-5 home win over SIU and a 31-28 home loss to Southwest Missouri.

Illinois State is 0-2 with road losses at Western Michigan, 48-7, and Murray State, 32-17.

THE COACHES: Tim Billings, a former assistant at Marshall, Missouri and Oklahoma, is 4-10 in his second season at Southeast Missouri. He is 1-0 vs. ISU.

Denver Johnson is 7-6 in his second season at ISU and is 28-18 in his fifth season as a collegiate head coach.

THE SERIES: Illinois State leads the series 8-2. The Indian wins came last year at Houck Stadium and in 1969 at Houck. The Indians are 0-8 at Normal.

LAST SEASON: Southeast upset the nationally ranked Redbirds 28-25 at Houck Stadium.

Southeast's Rodney Woodall returned a fumble 80 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter to give the Indians a 28-16 lead and after the Redbirds pulled to within 28-25 the Indians stopped a late Redbird drive at the one yard line to gain the win.

LAST WEEK: Jeromy McDowell passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score in the first half as Southeast built a 28-21 halftime lead.

In the second half, Southwest Missouri shut out the Indians while intercepting three McDowell passes.

The Indians led 28-24 going into the final quarter but a one-yard TD run by Demetrius Smith with 2:40 remaining gave Southwest the lead and the win.

Curtis Cooper and Willie Ponder had big nights for the Indians. Cooper rushed for 194 yards, had 67 yards receiving and 54 yards on punt returns to give him 315 all-purpose yards.

Ponder had eight catches for 170 yards and three touchdowns, which tied a school record.

SOUTHEAST VS. GATEWAY: Southeast is 1-1 vs. Gateway Conference teams this season after going 2-1 vs. the Gateway last season.

SOUTHEAST IN NCAA STATS: The Indians rank fourth nationally in passing offense with 320.67 yards per game and rank 15th nationally in total offense with 428.33 yards per game.

PONDER, SANDERS LEAD OVC: Southeast junior college transfers Willie Ponder and Adrian Sanders rank one-two in every OVC receiving category.

In receptions per game, Ponder ranks first with seven catches per game while Sanders is second with 5.67 catches per game. In receiving yards per game, Ponder is first with 137 while Sanders is second with 103.3 and in total receiving yards, Ponder is first with 411 and Sanders is second with 310.

Nationally, Ponder ranks first in receiving yards, seventh in receiving yards per game and 11th in receptions per game. He also ranks 15th nationally in all-purpose running with 173 yards per game.

McDOWELL NEARS RECORD: McDowell has 935 yards passing after just three games as he closes in the school record for a freshman passer. The record is 1,273 yards by Lance Brune in 1970 leaving McDowell just 338 yards from the record.

McDowell had a sensational second half against SIU and an equally sensational first half against Southwest Missouri. In the second half against SIU, he completed 14-23 passes for 317 yards and three TD's and in the first half of the SMS game he completed 16-22 passes for 257 yards and three TD's. That gave him consecutive half totals of 30-45 completions for 567 yards and six touchdowns.

For the season, McDowell 58-118 for 935 yards and seven TD's but has been intercepted six times.

In the opener at Eastern Michigan, McDowell completed 17-35 passes for 222 yards and one TD while being intercepted once.

McDowell leads the OVC and ranks 11th nationally in total offense with 290 yards per game and ranks second is passing with an average of 19.3 completions per game.

Seniors Rashad West, who has been hampered by a knee injury, and Bob Brune backup McDowell.

Brune was 1-1 for 27 yards against SIU and now has 3.422 yards passing in his fourth season at Southeast.

West has thrown for 1,828 yards and rushed for 677 yards in his two seasons at Southeast.

COOPER MOVES UP: Senior running back Curtis Cooper has 355 rushing yards after three games to rank third in OVC and 20th nationally in rushing with 118.3 yards per game. Last season, the Indians' top rusher had only 383 yards rushing for the season.

Cooper is second in the OVC and 13th nationally in all-purpose running with 181.67 yards per game.

PATTERSON IN TOP 10: Southeast defensive back Dimitri Patterson ranks seventh nationally with two interceptions for an average .67 per game.

INJURIES: Other than the usual bumps and bruises there were no injuries that will keep anyone out of the Illinois State game.

ANXIOUS TIME: The sister of Southeast linebacker Michael Irving was at work on the seventh floor of the World Trade Center when it was hit by a hijacked American Airlines plane last Tuesday. She was able to escape unhurt, but it was several hours before Irving learned that his sister was safe.

Irving had a cousin who worked on the 95th floor of the World Trade Center and he has not been heard from.

The parents of Tarik Simpson and Kelvin Jones work in downtown Manhattan but were not near the World Trade Center. They did have to walk over 100 blocks to return to their homes.

NEXT WEEK: Southeast Missouri will open OVC play against Tennessee State at Adelphia Coliseum in Nashville. Game time will be 1:30 p.m.
