This Week in the OVC THE TEAMS: Southeast is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the OVC after a 20-14 loss at Tennessee State. The Indians opened the season with 16-12 road loss at I-A Eastern Michigan, a 24-5 home win over SIU, a 31-28 home loss to Southwest Missouri and a 38-33 road win at Illinois St Tennessee-Martin is 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the OVC. THE COACHES: Tim Billings, a former assistant at Marshall, Missouri and Oklahoma, is 5-11 in his second season at Southeast Missouri. He is 1-0 vs. UTM. Sam McCorkle is 3-13 in his second year at UTM. He is 23-57-2 in his eighth year as a collegiate head coach. THE SERIES: Southeast leads 9-7. LAST SEASON: Southeast rolled up 409 yards in total offense in gaining a 34-14 win over the Skyhawks at Houck Stadium.. It was the Indians' fourth straight win in the series. Southeast led 28-14 at the half. Rashad West was 10-14 passing for 150 yards and one TD and also ran for a TD. Ricky Farmer had 20 tackles. LAST WEEK: Southeast had three plays inside the Tennessee State one-yard line in the final 14-seconds, but could not score as the Tigers held on for a 20-14 victory. The Indians used three quarterbacks with starter Bobby Brune followed by Rashad West and Jeromy McDowell. West drove the Indians 56 yards in six plays late in the second quarter with the touchdown coming on a four-yard pass to Willie Ponder. McDowell came on in the third quarter and his first pass was a 39-yard scoring strike to Ponder. For the game, Brune was 9-14 for 81 yards with 2 interceptions, West was 4-6 for 27 yards and one TD while McDowell, playing with a sprained knee, was 9-16 for 139 yards with one TD and one interception. Tennessee State passed for 344 yards while gaining 470 yards in total offense. COOPER HAS BIG DAY: Curtis Cooper, who had 245 all-purpose yards against Illinois State, had another big day against Tennessee State with 250 all-purpose yards. Cooper rushed the ball 22 times for 146 yards, caught nine passes for 70 yards and returned one kickoff for 34 yards. He continues to lead the OVC in all purpose yards with 208.6 yards per game. He ranks fifth nationally in all-purpose running. Cooper is second in the OVC and 17th nationally in rushing with 116.4 yards per game. SOUTHEAST TOPS OVC IN PASSING AND TOTAL OFFENSE: Southeast leads the OVC in passing offense with 305.8 yards per game and in total offense with 422.4 yards per game. SOUTHEAST IN NCAA STATS: The Indians rank eighth nationally in passing offense and rank 16th nationally in total offense. PONDER, SANDERS LEAD OVC: Southeast junior college transfers Willie Ponder and Adrian Sanders rank one-two in every OVC receiving category. In receptions per game, Ponder ranks first with 7.2 catches per game while Sanders is second with 5.2 catches per game. Cooper is third with 5.0 catches per game. In receiving yards per game, Ponder is first with 138.8 while Sanders is second with 86.2 and in total receiving yards, Ponder is first with 694 and Sanders is second with 431. Nationally, Ponder ranks third in receiving yards per game and eighth in receptions per game. He also ranks 14th nationally in all-purpose running with 164 yards per game and ranks 18th nationally in scoring with 9.6 points per game. McDOWELL INJURY: Quarterback Jeromy McDowell suffered a knee injury in the first quarter of the Illinois State game. An MRI on the injured knee revealed no structural damage. He came off the bench in the third quarter of the Tennessee State game and played the rest of the game. McDowell has 1,163 yards passing after just five games as he closes in the school record for a freshman passer. He needs just 111 yards to break the record of 1,273 yards by Lance Brune in 1970. The season passing record at Southeast is 2,580 yards by Jason Liley in 1990. McDowell had a sensational second half against SIU and an equally sensational first half against Southwest Missouri. In the second half against SIU, he completed 14-23 passes for 317 yards and three TD's and in the first half of the SMS game he completed 16-22 passes for 257 yards and three TD's. That gave him consecutive half totals of 30-45 completions for 567 yards and six touchdowns For the season, McDowell is 71-141 for 1,163 yards and eight TD's but has been intercepted seven times. McDowell is second in the OVC and ranks 37th nationally in total offense with 216.8 yards per game. Seniors West, who has been hampered by a knee injury, and Brune backup McDowell. Brune is 28-45 this season for 267 yards. He now has 3,662 yards passing in his fourth season at Southeast. West, who played for the first time this season at Tennessee State, has thrown for 1,855 yards and rushed for 681 yards in his three seasons at Southeast. FRESHMAN KICKERS: Southeast kicking duties are being handled by a pair of true freshmen. Derek Kutz is kicking PAT's and field goals while Brian Emmendorfer kicks off. Kutz, who is 4-5 in field goals and 10-12 in extra points, ranks 32nd nationally and fifth in the OVC with an average of 0.80 field goals per game. He holds five Missouri high school records including 52-52 PAT's last season, the best career PAT percentage with 98-99, 93 straight PAT's and 28 career field goals. He is tied for the state record for kicking points with 81 last season. His long field goal in high school was 46 yards. Emmendorfer has two of the longest field goals in Missouri high school history, 57 and 58 yards. INJURIES: Defensive tackle James Jennette suffered an ankle injury in the Tennessee State game. He is probable for the UTM game. Michael Irving did not play against TSU because of a shoulder injury but he is probable this week.
OVC HONORS: YOUNG SQUAD: The current Indian squad has 47 freshman and sophomores on the 76 man squad. There are 37 freshmen including redshirt freshmen and 9 sophomores. There are 19 juniors and only 11 seniors. ESPN FEATURES SOUTHEAST PLAY: ESPN featured the Adrian Sanders to Willie Ponder end-around pass play from the Illinois State game during halftime of the nationally televised game between Miami and Pittsburgh on Thursday night. SOUTHEAST 2-1 VS. GATEWAY: Southeast was 2-1 vs. Gateway Conference teams this season after also going 2-1 vs. the Gateway last season. ANXIOUS TIME: The sister of Southeast linebacker Michael Irving was at work on the seventh floor of the World Trade Center when it was hit by a hijacked American Airlines plane on Sept. 11. She was able to escape unhurt, but it was several hours before Irving learned that his sister was safe. Irving had a cousin who worked on the 95th floor of the World Trade Center and he has not been heard from. The parents of Tarik Simpson and Kelvin Jones work in downtown Manhattan but were not near the World Trade Center. They did have to walk over 100 blocks to return to their homes NEXT WEEK: Southeast Missouri will travel to Charleston, Ill. to take on OVC leader Eastern Illinois.
