This Week in the OVC THE TEAMS: Southeast is 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the OVC after losing 12-0 to Eastern Illinois in a torrential rain storm on Saturday. The Indians' OVC win is over Tennessee-Martin while the other loss is to Tennessee State. Murray State is 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the OVC with back-to-back league losses to Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky. THE COACHES: Tim Billings, a former assistant at Marshall, Missouri and Oklahoma, is 6-12 in his second season at Southeast Missouri. He is 0-1 vs. Murray State. Joe Pannunzio is 8-8 in his second season at Murray State. He is 1-0 vs. Southeast. THE SERIES: Murray State leads 30-4-1. The Racers have won the last eight games in the series. The last Southeast win in the series was 27-21 in 1992. LAST SEASON: Murray State jumped to a 14-0 first quarter lead and led 24-14 at the half. In the second half, Southeast twice pulled within a field goal, but a 65-yard run by Garner Byars finally clinched the 38-28 win for the Racers. LAST WEEK: Southeast dropped a 12-0 decision at Eastern Illinois in a torrential downpour that resulted in a very muddy field. In the bad conditions, the Southeast offense had only 156 yards including 99 rushing yards for Curtis Cooper. The Southeast defense allowed 313 yards in total offense including 241 rushing yards by J.R. Taylor who scored both EIU touchdowns. Murray State lost to Eastern Kentucky to drop to 0-2 in the OVC. SOUTHEAST AND MURRAY ARE SIMILAR: Southeast and Murray State are similar in several key statistical areas. Both teams have a lot of total offense yards but have trouble scoring. Southeast is second in the OVC in total offense with 390.2 yards per game while Murray State is third with 388.6 yards per game, but the Indians are sixth in the league in scoring with 23 points per game while Murray State is seventh with 19 points per game. In scoring defense, Murray State gives up 24.4 points per game while Southeast allows only 21 points per game.
COOPER LEADS OVC: Curtis Cooper continues to be a very big offensive weapon for Southeast. He leads the OVC and ranks third nationally in all-purpose running with 210.6 yards per game. He is second in OVC rushing with 128.1 yards per game that ranks him 15th nationally. For the second time this season, Cooper was the OVC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career high 216 yards against Tennessee-Martin on Oct. 6. It was the best rushing performance by Indian running back since Kelvin "Earthquake" Anderson rushed for 222 yards against Murray State on Sept. 3, 1992 Cooper had 245 all-purpose yards against Illinois State and 250 all-purpose yards against Tennessee State, had 292 all-purpose yards against Tennessee-Martin giving him a three-game total of 787 all-purpose yards. SOUTHEAST SECOND IN THE OVC IN PASSING AND TOTAL OFFENSE: Southeast ranks second in the OVC in passing offense with 246.7 yards per game and in total offense with 390.2 yards per game. SOUTHEAST IN NCAA STATS: The Indians rank 21st nationally in passing offense and rank 33rd nationally in total offense. PONDER, SANDERS LEAD OVC: Southeast junior college transfers Willie Ponder and Adrian Sanders rank at or near the top of every OVC receiving category. In receptions per game, Ponder ranks first with 6.0 catches per game while Sanders is tied for second with 5.0 catches per game. In receiving yards per game, Ponder is first with 103.6 while Sanders is third with 79.2 and in total receiving yards, Ponder is first with 725 and Sanders is second with 475. Nationally, Ponder ranks 16th in receiving yards per game and 17th in receptions per game. He also ranks 27th nationally in all-purpose running with 140.9 yards per game and ranks 50th nationally in scoring with 6.9 points per game. PONDER CLOSES ON RECORDS: Ponder has already tied the school record for touchdowns in a game with three against Southwest Missouri. He needs 31 catches, 382 yards and three touchdowns to hold each single season record outright. ANDERSON TOPS OVC TACKLES: Junior safety Prince Anderson leads the OVC and ranks fifth nationally in tackles with an average of 13.5 tackles per game. Ricky Farmer of Southeast is second in the OVC and 14th nationally with 12 tackles per game. McDOWELL NEAR FRESHMAN RECORD: Quarterback Jeromy McDowell needs just 21 yards passing to break the all-time freshman passing record at Southeast. McDowell has 1,253 yards passing after just sevn games as he closes in the school record for a freshman passer. He needs just 21 yards t+o break the record of 1,273 yards by Lance Brune in 1970. The season passing record at Southeast is 2,580 yards by Jason Liley in 1990. McDowell had a sensational second half against SIU and an equally sensational first half against Southwest Missouri. In the second half against SIU, he completed 14-23 passes for 317 yards and three TD's and in the first half of the SMS game he completed 16-22 passes for 257 yards and three TD's. That gave him consecutive half totals of 30-45 completions for 567 yards and six touchdowns For the season, McDowell is 89-175 for 1,253 yards and nine TD's but has been intercepted seven times. Senior Bobby Brune backsup McDowell. Brune is 38-63 this season for 375 yards. He now has 3,790 yards passing in his fourth season at Southeast. FRESHMAN KICKERS: Southeast kicking duties are being handled by a pair of true freshmen. Derek Kutz is kicking PAT's and field goals while Brian Emmendorfer kicks off. Kutz, who is 5-6 in field goals and 16-18in extra points, ranks 28th nationally and fourth in the OVC with an average of 0.83 field goals per game. WEST CAREER ENDS: Senior quarterback Rashad West underwent knee surgery on Friday, ending his senior season. West, who injured the knee in a pick-up basketball game this summer, played in only one game this season, completing 4-6 passes for 27 yards and one touchdown at Tennessee State. For his Southeast career West 150-269 for 1,955 yards and 8 touchdowns. He rushed the ball 155 times for 681 yards and 12 touchdowns. INJURIES: Linebacker John Paul Usrey (concussion) and defensive safety Leotis Belcher (sprained ankle) and wide receiver Adrian Sanders (bruised knee) all missed the EIU game. They are probable for Murray State.
OVC HONORS: HOMECOMING REUNIONS: It will be Homecoming at Southeast and two football teams will hold reunions. The 1950 Southeast team that was quarterbacked by former Tampa Bay Buccaneer general manager Phil Krueger who will be grand marshal of the Homecoming parade. Other members of the 1950 team that are expected to attend include Southeast All-American John Schneider, Doc Abernathy, Gordon Galbreath, Bill Hodges and former Southeast athletic director Marvin Rosengarten. Also holding a reunion will be the 1959 team that included Ken Iman who spent 14 seasons in the NFL with Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams. He was the Rams MVP in 1972. Other members of the 1959 squad who will be in attendance include Frank Czapla, DickDecker Roy Fassel, Dennis Kure, Gary Lane, John Leara, John Muench, Dutch Meyr, Rodney Miller, Gary Nichols, Jerry O'Connor, Larry Odum, Tom O'Keefe, Ken Plassmeyer, Bill Priday, Sid Sater, Roger Sherman, Tom Telle and former Southeast President Bill Stacy. The 1950 team will be introduced prior to the game and the 1959 team will be introduced at halftime.
