This Week in the OVC THE TEAMS: Southeast is 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the OVC after losing to Tennessee Tech 41-21 Saturday. The Indians' OVC win is over Tennessee-Martin while the losses are to Tennessee State, Eastern Illinois, Murray State and Tennessee Tech. Eastern Kentucky is 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the OVC. The Colonels have OVC wins over Tennessee-Martin, Murray State and Tennessee Tech with a loss to Eastern Illinois. THE COACHES: Tim Billings, a former assistant at Marshall, Missouri and Oklahoma, is 6-14 n his second season at Southeast Missouri. He is 0-1 vs. EKU. Roy Kidd, the nation's third winningest active coach, is 304-119-8 in his 38th season at EKU. He is 11-0 vs. Southeast. THE SERIES: Eastern Kentucky leads the series 11-0. LAST SEASON: Southeast led 10-7 after one quarter and led 17-14 in the second quarter before the Colonels exploded to a 31-17 halftime lead and increased the lead to 45-17 going into the fourth quarter. The final was 48-24 with EKU rushing for 399 yards while holding Southeast to just five yards rushing. LAST WEEK: Tennessee Tech beat the Indians 41-21 as Grant Swallows threw five touchdown passes for the Golden Eagles. TTU had 442 yards in total offense while Southeast had 369 yards. Eastern Kentucky was idle last Saturday. PONDER IS OVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Southeast junior wide receiver Willie Ponder has been honored as the OVC Newcomer of the Week after catching nine passes of 78 yards and one TD in the Tenn. Tech game. Ponder needs just 87 more receiving yards to become only the second player in Southeast history to have 1,000 yards receiving in a season. Darrell Philon, the school record holder, had 1,116 yards in 1991. Ponder's 913 yards is second best in school history. Ponder has already tied the school record for touchdowns in a game with three against Southwest Missouri. He needs 12 catches, 194 yards and one touchdown to hold each single season record outright. PONDER, SANDERS LEAD OVC: Southeast junior college transfers Ponder and Adrian Sanders rank at or near the top of every OVC receiving category In receptions per game, Ponder ranks first with 6.8 catches per game while Sanders is third with 5.0 catches per game. In receiving yards per game, Ponder is first with 101.4 while Sanders is fourth with 72.6 and in total receiving yards, Ponder is first with 913 and Sanders is second with 581. Nationally, Ponder ranks 9th in receptions per game and 15th in receiving yards per game. He also ranks 29th nationally in all-purpose running with 133.1 yards per game and ranks 60th nationally in scoring with 6.67 points per game. COOPER CLOSES IN ON 1,000: Senior running back Curtis Cooper needs just six more rushing yards to become only the third player in Southeast history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Cooper currently has 994 rushing yards to rank fifth on the single season all-time list at Southeast. The last Indian back to rush for 1,000 yards was Dione Tyler in 1995. Kelvin "Earthquake" Anderson rushed for over 1,000 yards in 1992, 1993 and 1994. Cooper needs just 21 rushing yards to move into second place on the Southeast single season all-time rushing list. Cooper leads the OVC and ranks fifth nationally in all-purpose running with 197.9 yards per game. He is third in OVC rushing with 110.4 yards per game that ranks him 20th nationally. For the second time this season, Cooper was the OVC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career high 216 yards against Tennessee-Martin on Oct. 6. It was the best rushing performance by Indian running back since Kelvin "Earthquake" Anderson rushed for 222 yards against Murray State on Sept. 3, 1992 Cooper had 245 all-purpose yards against Illinois State and 250 all-purpose yards against Tennessee State, and2 all-purpose yards against Tennessee-Martin giving him a three-game total of 787 all-purpose yards.
SINGLE SEASON RUSHING LEADERS NEW PASSING RECORDS: Southeast established three new passing records in the 45-35 loss to Murray State. The new team records include most passing attempts in a game, 56, and most completions in a game, 32. Redshirt freshman quarterback Jeromy McDowell established a new Southeast freshman passing record. McDowell has 1,789 yards passing after just nine games to break the record of 1,273 yards by Lance Brune in 1970. The season passing record at Southeast is 2,580 yards by Jason Liley in 1990. McDowell had a sensational second half against SIU and an equally sensational first half against Southwest Missouri. In the second half against SIU, he completed 14-23 passes for 317 yards and three TD's and in the first half of the SMS game he completed 16-22 passes for 257 yards and three TD's. That gave him consecutive half totals of 30-45 completions for 567 yards and six touchdowns SOUTHEAST LEADS OVC IN PUNT RETURNS: Southeast leads the OVC in punt returns with 12.8 yards per return. The Indians are second in kickoff returns with 20.47 yards per return and also rank second in passing offense with 261.7 yards per game and in total offense with 388.9 yards per game. SOUTHEAST IN NCAA STATS: The Indians rank 13th nationally in passing offense and rank 35th nationally in total offense. Southeast is 23rd nationally in punt returns and 35th nationally in kickoff returns. ANDERSON TOPS OVC TACKLES: Junior safety Prince Anderson, who had 14 tackles against Eastern Illinois, leads the OVC and ranks fifth nationally in tackles with an average of 12.4 tackles per game BRUNE MOVES UP CHARTS: Senior backup quarterback Bobby Brune is 49-88 this season for 461 yards. He has 3,876 yards passing in his fourth season at Southeast. Brune needs 60 yards passing to move into 6th place on the all-time passing list and 234 yards to surpass his father Greg on the all-time passing list at Southeast. Greg Brune passed for 4,109 yards from 1967 to 1967.
CAREER PASSING LEADERS: FRESHMAN KICKERS: Southeast kicking duties are being handled by a pair of true freshmen. Derek Kutz is kicking PAT's and field goals while Brian Emmendorfer kicks off. Kutz, who is 5-6 in field goals and 24-26 in extra points, ranks fourth in the OVC with an average of 0.83 field goals per game. WEST CAREER ENDS: Senior quarterback Rashad West underwent knee surgery on Friday, Oct. 12, ending his senior season. West, who injured the knee in a pick-up basketball game this summer, played in only one game this season, completing 4-6 passes for 27 yards and one touchdown at Tennessee State. For his Southeast career West 150-269 for 1,955 yards and 8 touchdowns. He rushed the ball 155 times for 681 yards and 12 touchdowns. INJURY ENDS GROSS' CAREER: Senior defensive back Mike Gross suffered a broken finger in practice last Wednesday ending his career at Southeast. In his fifth season at Southeast, Gross played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive safety during his career. This season, Gross had six tackles and 51 yard run on a faked punt. TANNER LEAVES TEAM: Freshman defensive back Bruce Tanner has left the Southeast football team for personal reasons. He played in six of this season with 31 tackles including one tackle for a loss of four yards. He started the Oct. 13 game at Eastern Illinois. Tanner has indicated he will transfer to another school at the end of the first semester. INJURIES: Southeast had no major injuries in the Tennessee Tech game.
OVC HONORS: NEXT WEEK: Southeast Missouri will close the season, hosting Quincy in a 6 p.m. game at Houck Stadium. |
