Blose Finishes Second In OVC Championships Men's golf team finishes fifth, one stroke off fourth place
May 1, 2002
PADUCAH, KY - The Austin Peay men's golf team edged Eastern Kentucky on the first playoff hole to capture the 2002 Ohio Valley Conference championship, which concluded Wednesday (May 1) at The Country Club of Paducah. Winning its second consecutive OVC title, AP edged Eastern Kentucky 19-20 on the first hole and earned the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament bid. Both AP and EKU shot an 892. Day two leader Morehead State (896) fell to third. Tennessee Tech (906) came in fourth while Southeast Missouri (907) rounded out the 'Top 5'. Murray State (908) fell from second to sixth followed by Tennessee State (913), Eastern Illinois (943) and Tennessee-Martin (946). Part of a three-way tie for the individual lead heading into the final round, TSU freshman Robert Dinnwiddie shot a 1-over 73, 216 overall, to claim medalist honors. That automatically earns him a spot on the all-conference team already announced last Sunday. Jimmy Blose of Southeast Missouri shot even par on day three and 219 for the tournament, good for second. The finish was the highest Southeast individual finish at the tournament since 1994 when Caine Fitzgerald won the tournament. Eastern Kentucky's Sam Covitz was next at 220 followed by Nick Atzinger from Morehead State (221), who was part of that first place three-way tie. EKU's Brad Morris and Matt Stark from Murray State tied for fifth at 222. Other notables for the Indians were Bryan Johson, tied for 17th with a 228, Woody Hill, tied for 22nd with a 232, Matt Hillis, tied for 28th with a 235, and Kent Phillips tied for 42nd with a 243. The 'Top 5' individual finishers (including ties) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Austin Peay head coach Mark Leroux was named OVC 'Coach of the Year'. |
