SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - (Tuesday, October 19, 2004) The Southeast Missouri State golf team made a run, but came up 10-strokes short of Southwest Missouri State at the 13-team SMS Golf Fall Invitational. Southeast finished in second with an 892 (+28) behind host SMS. It was Southeast's fourth top-three finish in five fall tournaments.

SMS won with a score of 882 (+18) followed by Southeast, Northern Illinois (897/+33), Southern Illinois (898/+34) and Murray State (902/+38) rounding out the top-five finishing teams.

Senior Matt Hillis didn't let the weather affect his play, he finished with final round score of 70 (2-under par). He finished with a 215 (-1) for second place at the tournament. His score of 66 in the opening round was the lowest score for a single round by any of the golfers. It was Hillis' fourth top-ten finish of the fall.

Mark Schmitz finished tied for sixth with a 222 (+6). It is his second top-ten finish of the fall.

Zack Decker finished tied for 14th with a 225 (+9) to round out the top finishers for the Indians.

SMS also took home the individual crown, Austin Hackett kept his hot play with a final round 70 (-2) to finish with a 210 (-6). Hackett shot under par in all three rounds of golf. Teammate Matt Sullivan finished in third with a two-over 218.

This ends Southeast's fall season; they will resume action in the spring of 2005.
