Three Southeast golf teams finish in the top 5 in the SEMO CUP
March 31, 2004 Cape Girardeau, MO - Southeast just finished hosting the 2004 SEMO CUP at Kimbeland Golf Club in Jackson. The tournament took place on March 29-30 and they played against UT-Martin. The SEMO CUP is the only golf tournament that the Southeast team had scheduled at home and team scores were not kept.
Three of Southeast's teams were awarded spots in the top five. The Southeast golf coach, Carroll Williams, said that the six individuals (two from each team) that placed in the top five spots, are well rounded players and made great efforts. He also stated that almost all of the six individuals improved on their short game.
The two-day, 54-hole, event featured 18 holes of scramble and 18 holes of alternate shot on Monday; followed by 18 holes of best ball Tuesday. Southeast's combinations of Matt Hillis-Brandon Couch and Mark Schmitz-Zack Decker tied for second at 208, with Hillis-Couch getting the go-ahead on a scorecard playoff. Southeast's Kent Phillips and Brian Sheehan were fourth with 212, followed by UT-Martin's Hunter Prescott and Andy Bell with 214.
Coach Williams said that the SEMO CUP was devised to give the two-man teams a break from the monotony and to have a little fun. Overall, Williams is very pleased with the golf team so far this season and the whole team is looking forward to the Belmont Invitational, which is the upcoming tournament in Franklin, TN.
