Southeast to Compete in D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at Illinois State Starting this Sunday
Sept. 11, 2003 Following a seventh place finish at last week's Harris Fall Classic home meet, the Southeast men's golf team, led this past week by Brian Sheehan's 10th place finish and Kent Phillips' team low score of 72 in both the second and third rounds, is preparing for the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate come this Sunday and Monday, hosted by Illinois State University. Many of the schools invited to last week's meet here at Southeast will be making the trip to Normal, Illinois as well, including Bradley, Eastern and Western Illinois, Evansville and Lewis Universities, the University of Missouri-Kansas City and last week's first place competition, the Southern Illinois-Carbondale Salukis. Coach Williams is expecting strong competition from Southern Illinois again, along with host school Illinois State, Southwest Missouri State and Northern Iowa University. "Their (Illinois State's) course is not as tough as bent creek's," said Williams. "There's not as many water hazards. Only three or four holes contain significant out of bounds territories. At bent creek, there's a chance to hit the ball out of bounds on every hole." Each day of golf will begin at a shot gun start time of 8:30 a.m., which means every team's group of players will begin play at the same time, but on different holes. A practice round will be played in the morning, followed by the first round on the first day and the next two rounds on the last day. |
