Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Junior guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) recorded 17 points and a game-high five assists in leading Southeast Missouri State to a Ohio Valley Conference road win Saturday evening over conference-leading Eastern Illinois by a score of 55-51 at EIU's Lantz Arena. The Redhawks improve to 9-5 (4-1) on the year and the Panthers saw their record fall to 6-8 (5-1).

The home team took an early 6-3 lead at the 16:26 mark on a pair of free throws by sophomore Maggie Kloak before Southeast notched a 13-7 run over a six-minute stretch to gain a 16-11 advantage with 10:24 left in the stanza with a pair of free throws from junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC). Junior center Rachel Galligan scored eight points as part of 12-6 EIU run in which the Panthers posted a 23-22 lead with three minutes remaining in the half. The Redhawks regained the lead at 26-23 at the 1:48 mark thanks to consecutive layups from junior forward Rachel Blunt (Dexter, Mo./Dexter). Galligan drained a pair of free throws with 1:30 left that sliced EIU's deficit at 26-25 which remained the score going into halftime.

Five straight Nixon points in the first 1:32 of the second half increased Southeast's advantage to 31-25, but the Panthers tallied a 14-5 scoring drive over a seven-plus minute stretch to take their first lead of the game at 39-36 on a three-pointer by junior Ellen Canale at the 10:37 mark. After trading leads through a six-minute stance, Blunt and Nixon drained consecutive three-pointers in a minute as the Redhawks reclaimed a 49-43 lead with 4:39 left in the game. Galligan tallied a pair of layups to cut the advantage to 49-47 at the 3:29 mark, but a free throw by senior center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) brought the mark back to three just 16 seconds later. Whitney would score three of Southeast's final five points of the game while the visitors used its defensive pressure in the final minutes to seal the win.

Whitney finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and a game-high three blocks for the Redhawks, while Blunt added 11 points. Junior guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) produced seven points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Glenn contributed six points and five rebounds in the contest.

Galligan led EIU with 19 points and three steals in 24 minutes off the bench. Canale posted 12 points, including 4-of-5 from the free throw line, while Kloak notched 10 points and a game-high nine boards.

Southeast is back in action Monday evening at the Show Me Center with an OVC battle against Murray State with the tip-off set for 5 p.m.
