Southeast Posts 64-46 Home Win Over Tennessee State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Sophomore guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) produced a career-best 26 points and four steals as Southeast Missouri State captured a 64-46 win in Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball action tonight at the Show Me Center. With the win, the Redhawks improve their season record to 12-5 (7-2), while the Lady Tigers fall to 4-13 (1-7) on the year.

Southeast claimed an early 13-4 lead behind nine points from Daugherty during the game's first seven minutes. Daugherty connected on a jumper that increased the Redhawks' lead to 18-4 at the 10:54 mark. Tennessee State posted a quick 6-2 run to close within 20-10 on a layup from sophomore Jamika Banks with 9:23 remaining. The home team closed out the half with a 13-5 scoring drive, including a three-pointer from sophomore guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) to take a 33-15 advantage into the break.

The Redhawks continued where the left off in the second half as they scored 12 of the stanza's first 21 points in a five-plus minute stretch to post a 45-21 lead with 14:30 remaining in the game. The Lady Tigers came back with a 10-2 run, including three points from sophomore Tiffany Jackson, which sliced their deficit to 47-31 less than three minutes later. Southeast increased its lead to 59-37 at the 5:21 mark with a 12-6 run and Tennessee State ended the game by scoring nine of the final 14 points for the final margin.

Senior center Lachelle Lyles (Chicago, Ill./Shelton State CC) posted a game-high 17 rebounds in addition to five points and three assists for Southeast, while junior forward Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) contributed eight points and five caroms and junior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC) added seven points.

Sophomore Kendra Appling led the Lady Tigers with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while freshman Jamika Banks added nine points and five rebounds. Fellow freshman Jheri Booker contributed a team-best eight rebounds and Tiffany Jackson finished with three steals.

The Redhawks are back in action this Saturday at the Show Me Center as it faces conference foe Tennessee Tech with a 5 p.m., start time.
