Women's Hoops Downs UTM 70-49
Cape Girardeau, Mo. (January 20, 2003) - Junior forward Yashika Sidbury was 6-8 from the field and 5-7 from behind the arc for 21 points tonight as the Southeast Missouri State basketball team cruised to a 21-point victory over the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin, 70-49. Southeast moves its overall record to 20-5, and 4-1 in the OVC, while the Skyhawks fall to 5-11, and 2-3 in the conference. Southeast started another game off slow as they let UTM jump out to a 13-4 lead, before scoring the game's next seven points to take a one-point advantage. Both teams exchanged leads throughout the half, with the game being tied three times, but the Otahks got two late free-throws from senior forward Lori Chase to give them a one-point advantage. The Otahks came out in the second half and quickly took a seven point lead. That lead grew to 10, at 47-37 by the ten minute mark. The Skyhaws never got any closer as Southeast eventually took its lead to 21 with one minute remaining. Southeast was led on the night by a strong outing from Sidbury. She was 6-8 from the field, 5-7 from behind the arc, and 4-5 from the line. She had 21 points and nine rebounds, as well. Junior forward Carina Souza and freshman guard Tiffanne Ryan had ten points apiece. Souza added seven rebounds to go with her ten points. Southeast shot only 39 percent on the night, but UTM bettered that mark with a 34 percent showing. The Otahks had their lowest free-throw shooting performance on the season so far as they shot only 63 percent from the charity stripe. Southeast will now be off till this Saturday when they travel to Clarksville, Tenn. and take on the Lady Govs of Austin Peay. The game will take place at 5 p.m. |
