Skyhawks Knock Off Southeast Missouri State At Home, 63-54

MARTIN, Tenn. - Sophomore Phyllisha Mitchell produced a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead three players in double figure scoring as host Tennessee-Martin claimed a 63-54 victory over Southeast Missouri State here tonight in Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball action at Skyhawk Arena. The Skyhawks improve their season record to 13-10 (8-7) while the Redhawks fall to 15-7 (10-4) on the year.

The Skyhawks posted a 14-5 advantage in the game's first 7:45 that ended with four points on consecutive jumpers from junior Alishia Glover. Southeast sliced its deficit to 14-11 at the 9:48 mark thanks to a 6-0 run behind four points from sophomore guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock). Mitchell then tallied six points as part of a 13-2 scoring drive in a six-plus minute span to increase UT Martin's lead at 27-13 before a hook shot from senior center Joiceline Thesing (Partas Sao Carlo, Brazil/Labette County CC) closed the game to 27-15 before halftime.

UT Martin continued where it left off in the second half as it produced an 8-0 run in a 3:26 span to take its biggest lead of the game at 35-17 with 16:34 left. The Redhawks produced another comeback just 27 seconds later as sophomore guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) keyed a 12-3 run in three minutes with six points to bring the visitors back within nine (38-29) at the 13:02 mark. The Skyhawks later scored 13 of the next 19 points during a stretch of eight minutes to hike their lead to 51-35 with 5:15 remaining. Southeast then tallied an 11-2 run behind eight points from Daugherty that sliced its deficit to 53-46 at the 3:29 mark. The score stayed the same until the final minute when UT Martin tallied 10 of the game's final 18 points, including seven free throws from freshman Nicole Holman down the stretch, for the final margin.

Daugherty led all scorers with 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field, while senior center Lachelle Lyles (Chicago, Ill./Shelton State CC) added a game-high 18 rebounds with seven points. Nixon and junior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC) contributed eight points apiece for Southeast.

In addition to Mitchell, Holman added 11 points, all from the charity stripe, and Angler tallied 10 points with a game-high five assists for UT Martin. Junior Crystal Fuller produced 11 rebounds and junior Victoria Carlile scored nine points.

Southeast returns to the Show Me Center on Thursday, Feb. 8, where it faces OVC-leading Morehead State in a conference contest with a 5 p.m., start time.
