Otahkians Fall in Last Seconds To UTM

Box Score

Martin, Tenn. (February 17, 2003) - Tennessee-Martin's Amy Watson poured in two free throws with five seconds to go to lead the Skyhawks to a one point victory over Southeast Missouri tonight, 60-59. Southeast moves to 15-9 and 9-4 in the OVC, while Martin moves to 10-14 and 7-6.

Southeast led at the half 29-24, as they shot 39 percent to UTM's 28. They made only 1-7 threes in the first half and were 4-6 from the free throw line. Martin kept close by making 3-4 from behind the arc.

Southeast took that lead into the second half at one time led by as many as 12 points. The Skyhawks used a 12-2 run late, sparked by Danielle Page's three-pointer with 6:02 to play, to claw back into the contest.

Southeast led again by six twice late, but turnovers and clutch free throw shooting kept Martin alive. The Otahks led by one with just under 30 seconds left and had the ball in their own end after a timeout. The inbound play was intercepted, however, and Watson drove the court and took a shot, but was fouled by junior forward Yashika Sidbury.

She calmly stepped to the line and made both free throws. Soutehast had just over five seconds left, and junior guard Sarah Costello drove the length of the court only to miss a six foot jumper at the buzzer.

Southeast was led on the night by junior forward Carina Souza. Souza had 13 points and eight rebounds on 6-12 shooting from the field. She played a team-high 32 minutes. Costello and Sidbury had nine points each, with freshman guard Shannon Proffit chipping in with eight points of her own.

Watson was a one-person wrecking crew for the Skyhawks. She had 23 points with her two biggest coming with five seconds left. She was 8-17 from the free throw line and 6-7 from the line.

Southeast now will play host next Saturday to the Lady Govs of Austin Peay. The Otahks had a chance tonight to sure up at least third place in the conference, with Eastern Kentucky losing at Morehead. Now Morehead and Martin are tied at 7-6, just two games back of Southeast. Game time on Saturday is slated for 5:30 p.m. and will be Senior Night.
