Redhawks Capture 87-61 Exhibition Win Over Lambuth

Nov. 4, 2006

Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State women's basketball kick continued its preparation for the upcoming season on a good note after posting an 87-61 victory over visiting Lambuth in an exhibition contest Friday night at the Show Me Center. Six players finished in double figures as the public had its first opportunity to see the Redhawks since the end of last season.

"I felt that there were a lot of inconsistencies on the floor and the intensity wasn't there at times, but we did receive some nice performances from several individuals," said head coach B.J. Smith. "Our shot selection was good tonight, but we have a lot of room to improve before next weekend."

In the opening half, Southeast jumped out to an early 8-2 lead on a layup by sophomore guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock). A quick 6-0 run by Lambuth evened the score at 8-8 at the 16:03 mark on a jumper from senior Meghan Fuqua. A 22-7 scoring drive over seven minutes, highlighted by 10 points from sophomore guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland), helped the Redhawks capture a 30-15 advantage with 6:28 remaining. After a layup from senior Reggie Maddox closed the Eagles' deficit at 32-20, Southeast used 10-2 run to head into intermission with a 42-22 lead.

The Redhawks continued where they left off in the first half by outscoring Lambuth by a 13-4 margin in a span of 7:12 to claim a 55-26 lead. Another Daugherty layup at the 7:14 mark pushed the Redhawks to a 66-36 advantage. Two free throws from Nixon later handed Southeast its biggest lead of the contest at 82-50 with less than three minutes remaining. The Eagles came back with an 11-2 run to close within 84-61, but a three-point play from junior forward/center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) with 42 seconds left capped the game's scoring.

Nixon and junior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC) paced the Redhawks with 15 points apiece while Daugherty added 13 points. Senior center Lachelle Lyles (Chicago, Ill./Shelton State CC) produced a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Whitney finished with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting and eight rebounds.

Lambuth had two players in double figures, led by Maddox with 15 points and Fuqua with 14 points.

The Redhawks open the season on Nov. 11 at Tulsa with the tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
