Women's Basketball Slips Past Henderson State, 59-58

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Junior guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) tallied her second career double-double with a game-high 25 points and a career high-tying 10 rebounds as Southeast Missouri State women's basketball (2-0) captured a 59-58 win over visiting Henderson State (0-1) Tuesday night at the Show Me Center.
The Lady Reddies jumped out to an early 13-7 lead in the opening four minutes of the game behind five points from senior Katie Williams. Southeast came back with four points from senior center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) in a minute to slice its deficit to 13-11 before another trey from Williams hiked the visitors' advantage back to five at 16-11 at the 14:55 mark.
Four straight points from junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC) opened an 8-3 scoring drive for the Redhawks over a six-plus minute stretch that evened the contest at 19-all with 7:38 remaining in the stanza that was capped by a jumper from senior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC). Southeast then scored nine of the next 12 points in a minute and a half to gain its biggest lead of the half at 28-22, but Henderson State rattled off a 9-2 run to end the half and enter intermission with a 31-30 leading margin.
A 13-6 scoring run in the first four-plus minutes of the second half gave Henderson State a 43-36 advantage as Williams posted four points during the run. Another Williams three-pointer later gave the Lady Reddies a 48-42 lead at the 12:07 mark. Daugherty later tallied a 9-1 run for Southeast as it eventually claimed a 51-50 advantage with 6:26 left in the game before both teams traded the lead back and forth for near three-minute stretch. Layups from junior Tiffany Smith and senior Candy Hall helped Henderson State regain a 56-53 lead at the 2:18 mark before a Daugherty three tied the score at 56-all with 1:58 remaining.
A pair of Williams free throws with 1:15 left put HSU ahead by a 58-56 score, but Daugherty evened the score once again with a layup at the 58-second mark. Whitney split a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining to put the Redhawks in the lead at 59-58 and junior forward Rachel Blunt (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) got the game-clinching steal at the buzzer for the win.
Whitney finished with nine points and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while Glenn notched 10 caroms with four points. Junior guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) recorded a game-best four steals and sophomore forward Kaitlyn Peddie (Brisbane, Australia/Queensland Tech) tallied four blocked shots in her first collegiate game.
Williams ended the game with 20 points, five rebounds and a game-high five assists for Henderson State, while Hall contributed a double-double with a game-best 13 boards and 11 points.
The Redhawks travel to Central Arkansas for their first road game of the season on Saturday with a start time of 4 p.m.
