CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Senior center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) produced a game-high 21 points with nine rebounds and three blocked shots as Southeast Missouri State women's basketball posted its first 4-0 start as a Division I program with a 73-57 win over visiting Cumberland (4-1) tonight at the Show Me Center.

The last Southeast women's team to post a 4-0 record to open the season was the 1990-91 squad that went on to play for the NCAA Division II national championship in its final season as a Division II school as it joined the Division I ranks in 1991-92.

The visitors broke an early 6-6 tie with a 6-0 run to claim a 12-6 advantage at the 13:08 mark that ended on a free throw from sophomore Keela Henry. Southeast bounced back with a 6-0 run of its own behind four points from junior guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) to tie the score at 12-all with over 10 minutes remaining. After Cumberland recaptured the lead at 22-17 thanks to a 10-5 scoring drive at the 7:26 mark, Daugherty and Whitney combined to score seven points as part of a 21-3 run in a seven-plus minute stretch to help the Redhawks enter halftime ahead by a 38-25 advantage.

A jumper from Whitney gave Southeast a 20-point lead at 45-25 early in the second half with 17:08 remaining the contest. The Lady Bulldogs later tallied a 17-10 run over six-minute span with eight points coming from Henry to close their deficit to within 55-42 at the 9:40 mark. Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Peddie (Boonah, Queensland, Australia/Queensland Tech) jumpstarted a 12-2 run over a stretch of 4:16 with a layup at the 9:26 mark as the Redhawks produced their biggest advantage of the game at 67-44. The closet point total that Cumberland would get for the rest of the game was 16 points near the end.

Daugherty recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals for Southeast, while junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC) contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Peddie finished with nine points and four boards, junior forward Rachel Blunt (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) tallied six points with three caroms and three steals, and senior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC) added six assists and five rebounds for the Redhawks.

Henry paced Cumberland with 21 points, while junior Chalqualia Gaten and freshman Lapinia Roe contributed 10 points apiece. Roe also posted a game-high five blocks and senior Renae Williams recorded a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Redhawks travel to New Mexico this weekend to compete in the New Mexico State Thanksgiving Classic at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces beginning Friday evening against Texas State with a start time of 5 p.m.
