Southeast Falls to Powerful Oklahoma Squad
Nov. 24, 2003 Norman, Okla. - Despite staying close throughout most of the first half, the Southeast Missouri State University women's basketball team lost to No. 19 Oklahoma 83-48. In what was a very physical game, Southeast (1-2) was led by forward Chandra Brown, who had a game-high 16 points. Brown, who was named OVC Newcomer of the week on Monday, also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. However, despite Brown's 7-for-11 shooting from the floor, the rest of the squad was able to penetrate the Sooner defense.
The usually sharp-shooting squad of Southeast was a meager 2-for-20 from beyond the three-point arc. Oklahoma (2-0) shot 55.1 percent from the floor, in comparison to Southeast's 29.6 percent. However, Southeast did manage to keep Oklahoma scoreless from three-point range. The Sooners were useless from long range, missing on all seven attempts.
At the half Oklahoma led 38-24, but the contest was closer throughout most of the half. Southeast tied the score 6-6 on a Jessica Aebi layup with 16:06 left in the half. Oklahoma took the lead from then, gaining as much as a 12-point advantage on two occasions before Southeast cut it to just a seven-point lead. However, the Sooners closed out the half with a late seven-point run to lead by 14 at the half. In the second half, Oklahoma proved to big for Southeast, hitting 67 percent of its shots in the half, outscoring Southeast 45-24 in the second stanza. The Sooners showed their power on the boards as well, outrebounding Southeast 46-26 on the night. Brown was the only player to reach double digits for Southeast. Aebi chipped in with nine points, and had a strong 3-for-5 from the field, including 1-for-1 from long distance and 2-for-2 from the foul line. For Oklahoma, Leah Rush had 16 points, and Caton Hill had 14. Maria Villarroel and Dionnah Jackson had 11 points each, with Villarroel leading all players with eight rebounds.
