Women's Basketball Falls to Northern Colorado, 60-49

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Freshman Kate Kevorken tallied a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in leading Northern Colorado captured a 60-49 win over Southeast Missouri State Saturday evening to close the two-day New Mexico State Thanksgiving Classic at NMSU's Pan American Center. The Bears hike their season record to 3-2, while the Redhawks drop to 4-2 on the year.

A 16-5 run in the game's opening 8:12 put Northern Colorado in the lead midway through the first half with six points coming from senior Danielle Hagen. The Redhawks cut their advantage to eight (20-11) thanks to three-pointers from junior forward Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) and junior guard Szandra Pál (Budapest, Hungary/Vorosmarty Mihaly) with over seven minutes remaining in the stanza. The Bears later responded with 12-3 scoring drive, mostly on three-point baskets, that later increased their advantage to 32-14. Southeast tallied five of the final six points in the half as it entered intermission down by a score of 33-19.

In the second half, Northern Colorado scored 12 of the first 23 points in the first five-plus minutes behind six points from junior Jamie Schroeder to claim a 45-30 advantage. A pair of free throws from freshman forward Lauren Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) brought Southeast to within 45-32 with 12:39 left in the game. A three by sophomore Alisa Christopherson opened a 12-6 scoring drive that propelled the Bears back to a 19-point advantage at 57-38 at the 5:52 mark. The Redhawks outscored Northern Colorado by an 11-2 margin in the final three minutes to end the game.

Daugherty finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field for Southeast. Pal posted a pair of career highs with eight points and six rebounds, while junior guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) added eight points.

Stoermer and junior Whitley Cox contributed 11 points and seven rebounds apiece for the Bears, while Hagen posted a game-high 11 rebounds with nine points.

The Redhawks return to Cape Girardeau for a non-conference showdown against nationally-ranked Baylor at the Show Me Center on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
