Otahks Get Second Win In a Row Over Lipscomb

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (December 5, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian basketball team won its second game in a row tonight as they used a big second half to defeat the Lady Bison of Lipscomb University, 71-50. Southeast moved its record to 3-2 and Lipscomb moved to 1-3.

Southeast did not start the game well at all as half way through the first half they found themselves down 15-9. They went on a 13-6, run, however to tie up the game at 21 on a three point basket by junior forward Yashika Sidbury. Junior forward Carina Souza hit a lay up to take a two-point lead for the Otahks and they never looked back.

Southeast shot just 19 percent midway through the first frame, but kicked it into high gear and after a string of shots, they were at 42 percent at the half. Sidbury had seven points and two rebounds to lead the Otahks at the half, while Souza had six points and four rebounds as Southeast led 30-27 at the break.

The Otahkians opened up the second half by going on a 19-3 run and pushed their lead to 49-30. They ended the game on a 15-10 run to take the victory, their third of the season.

Southeast was led by Sidbury and Souza. Both had 14 points and six and six and five rebounds, respectively. Junior guard Sarah Costello had her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 assists. She was two steals away from a triple-double on the night.

The Otahkians shot 47 percent on the night and was a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe. Lipscomb shot 46 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the arc, but were plagued by poor free-throw shooting as they were only 3-7 from the line.

Next up for the Otahks is a trip to Birmingham, Alabama as they take on the Lady Bulldogs of Samford University. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
