CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Junior Obiageli Okafor recorded a game-high 16 points in leading Tennessee State to a 61-49 victory over Southeast Missouri State at the Show Me Center in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams. The Lady Tigers improved to 3-5 (1-0) on the year and the Redhawks' season record dropped to 4-5 (0-1).

Tennessee State captured an 8-2 lead in the first three-plus minutes behind four points by junior Obiageli Okafor. Southeast regrouped by scoring nine of the next 11 points in a 4:34 stretch with seven coming from junior guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) to claim an 11-10 advantage. The Lady Tigers received four points from freshman Jasmine Ellis en route to scoring 11 straight points in a three-plus minute stretch to post a 21-11 lead at the 8:11 mark. A 10-1 run helped the Redhawks slice their deficit to a point at 22-21 with 5:04 left in the stanza thanks to junior forward Rachel Blunt's (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) eight points in the run, but baskets from Okafor and junior guard Kendra Appling provided the final points of the half as TSU entered intermission ahead by a 26-21 margin.

Southeast opened the second half with an 8-2 scoring run to take a 29-28 advantage that culminated with a three-pointer from Daugherty at the 16:44 mark. Both teams would trade the lead over the next four minutes before an 18-9 run propelled the visitors to its first double-digit lead of the game at 52-42 with 5:19 remaining. The Redhawks would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC) tallied her first double-double in a Southeast uniform with a season-best 14 points and 12 rebounds. Blunt and Daugherty contributed 12 points with Blunt grabbing six boards along with junior guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland).

TSU also received 13 points from junior Charisse Hicks on 5-of-6 shooting with three rebounds and three steals, while Appling posted 12 points, four assists and four rebounds. Junior Tiffany Jackson added nine points and three caroms.
