Women's Basketball Captures 69-60 OVC Victory at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) produced a game-high 21 points and connected on a career-best 4-of-5 from three-point range in leading Southeast Missouri State women's basketball to a 69-60 win over Samford in a Ohio Valley Conference contest Tuesday night at the Pete Hanna Center. The Redhawks improve to 6-5 (2-1) on the year, while the Bulldogs drop their season record to 6-4 (0-2).

Samford claimed an early 3-0 lead on a three-pointer from redshirt sophomore Monica Maxwell just 15 seconds into the game, but the visitors produced a 20-5 run in nine-plus minutes with seven points coming from Daugherty to claim a 20-7 advantage at the 10:46 mark. After senior center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) put the Redhawks ahead by a 25-14 margin with 7:56 remaining in the first half, the Bulldogs tallied a 13-3 scoring drive over six minutes which sliced their deficit at 28-27 at the 1:54 mark on a layup from senior Taryn Towns. Southeast scored five of the half's final nine points to enter the halftime break ahead by a 33-31 margin.

A 10-2 run in the opening 3:34 of the second half propelled the home team to a 41-35 lead with six points coming from freshman Emily London. Southeast responded with a 10-0 run of its own during a stretch of three minutes that was capped by a three from junior guard Tierra Johnson (Poplar Bluff, Mo./Three Rivers CC) at the 13:15 mark for a 45-41 advantage. A Daugherty trey later jumpstarted another 13-4 run in the final five minutes that sealed the win for the Redhawks.

Junior forward Rachel Blunt (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) added 16 points for Southeast. Junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC) posted eight points and eight rebounds. Whitney tallied eight boards and seven points, while junior guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) contributed seven points and a career-high eight assists.

Towns paced Samford with 15 points, six caroms and six assists in addition to connecting on 8-of-8 from the free throw line. London also scored 15 points and junior Chika Okoli added 12 points.

The Redhawks head to Jacksonville, Ala., on Thursday evening for an OVC contest against host Jacksonville State at the Pete Mathews Coliseum with the opening tip set for 5:30 p.m.
