Otahkians Claim Consolation Championship in Lopsided Victory

Box Score

St. Louis, Mo. (December 21, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian basketball team captured its second-straight consolation championship in a tournament this season as they defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb, 98-63 in the Coca-Cola/Billiken Classic. Southeast moves its record to 6-3, and Gardner-Webb falls to 1-8.

Southeast controlled the momentum from the start. They opened the game with a 10-2 run and quickly built a halftime lead of 47-22. At the half, junior forward Carina Souza had 12 points. Southeast benefited from 15 Gardner-Webb turnovers, as well.

The second half was more of the same as Southeast scored 50 or more points in the second half for the third time in its last four games. The Otahks had 51 points in the second frame and put away the Lady Bulldogs in easy fashion.

Southeast was led by Souza's 26 points and seven rebounds. She was 12-19 from the field and was 1-1 from behind the arc. Senior forward Lori Chase had 17 points and six rebounds on 4-9 shooting and 8-10 from the free throw line. Senior guard LaShelle Porter had 13 points and 10 rebounds in her best showing of the season as she was 5-6 from the field and 3-4 from the line. Freshman guard Tiffanne Ryan had 14 points and six rebounds on the night.

Southeast shot 50 percent in the first half and 45 percent in the second for a 47 percent mark on the game. They continued to struggle from behind the arc as they shot only 21 percent from three-point land. They had 22-27 from the free throw line as they made up for the lack or free throw shooting last night.

Souza was named to the All-Tournament team as she averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds for the tournament. In the championship game, Saint Louis defeated Indiana State by 14, 67-53. The Billikens moved to 8-3 on the season and the Sycamores moved to 5-2. Southeast will now have a few days off for Christmas, before flying out to Norman, Okla. this Friday to take on the Sooners of Oklahoma. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
