Redhawks End 2007 with 67-45 Win Over Buffalo

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Senior center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) recorded a game-high 21 points and a season-best five blocked shots as Southeast Missouri State women's basketball closed out the year Saturday afternoon with a 67-45 non-conference victory over visiting Buffalo at the Show Me Center. The Redhawks improved to 8-5 on the year while the Bulls dropped their record to 6-6.

Southeast posted a 20-14 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game that culminated with a three-pointer from junior guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) and later hiked its lead at 26-16 with 7:54 left in the half on a pair of Whitney free throws. The Redhawks increased their advantage to 11 points (31-20) on a trey from junior guard Sonya Daugherty (St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) at the 4:43 mark before the visitors sliced its deficit to 31-26 with six straight points in a three-minute stretch. Both teams split the final four points of the half, but the home team entered intermission with a 33-28 lead.

The Bulls opened the second stanza by producing 10 of the first 19 points to close within four points (42-38) at the 13:05 mark on a layup from freshman Bridgette Kendricks. Daugherty connected on a three at 9:07 which began a 20-4 scoring drive for Southeast that ran over five minutes as it extended its leading margin to 62-42 with 3:39 left in the game with Whitney tallying eight points during the run. Buffalo could get no closer than 18 points in the final minutes down the stretch.

Nixon contributed 11 points that includes going 3-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line for Southeast, while junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC) added 10 points and six rebounds. Daugherty scored nine points, junior forward Rachel Blunt (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) posted eight points with six boards and senior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC) notched three assists.

Buffalo was led offensively by senior Heather Turner, who posted 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Sophomore Ashley Zuber added seven points, Kendricks finished with six points, junior Jamie Schiebner recorded six caroms and junior Dortae Freeman posted a game-high five assists.

The Redhawks resume Ohio Valley Conference play on Jan. 5 at conference-leading Eastern Illinois with a start time of 5 p.m.
