Southeast Travels to Clarksville to Take on Lady Govs

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (January 24, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian Basketball team will travel to Clarksville, Tenn. this weekend as they continue OVC play against the Lady Govs of Austin Peay State University. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m. at the Dunn Center. Southeast Missouri is 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. They are coming off an a solid defensive performance against the Skyhakws of Tennessee-Martin, winning 70-49 Monday night. After starting slow, and only leading by one at the half, they turned up the defense and allowed only 23 points in the second half, while scoring 43 of their own. They have wins over Murray State, Tennessee-Martin, Morehead State, Eastern Illinois, Gardner-Webb, Lipscomb, Samford and Oakland City, but have lost to SMS, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Indiana State, Oklahoma, and Eastern Kentucky. Southeast is being led by junior guard Kenja White's 14.5 points per game. White is second on the team in three-point percentage with a 33 percent average. Senior forward Lori Chase is second in scoring with a 13.7 mark and leads the team in rebounding and three point shooting with 5.9 rebounds per game and 35 percent from behind the arc. Junior forward Carina Souza is third in scoring with a 11.7 per game average, as she, White, and Chase are the only Otahks to start every single game this season. Junior guard Yashika Sidbury is fourth in scoring with 10.4 points per game and continues to lead the team in free-throw shooting averaging 91 percent from the line. She ranks among the league leaders in that category, as well. The Lady Govs are 11-3 on the season and are a perfect 4-0 in conference play. They are the pre-sason number one team in the League and are playing like it as of late. They have wins over Evansville, Ohio, UMKC, Missouri, Morris Brown, UAB, Middle Tennessee, Murray State, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State. They have lost to only Memphis, Vanderbilt, and Ohio State. APSU is being led by their All-OVC senior guard, Brooke Armistead. Armistead is scoring 17.8 points per contest, while pulling down 3.8 boards per game. Armistead is averaging nearly 30 minutes per game and shoots over 42 percent from the field. Leading the inside attack for the Lady Govs is All-OVC forward Gerlonda Hardin. Hardin is scoring 14.5 points per game and is pulling down a team-leading 8.3 rebounds per contest. Hardin leads the league in field goal percentage with an amazing 60 percent from the field. After this game, Southeast will head off on the road again as they take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers on January 30 at 5:15 p.m. in Charleston, Ill. |
