Otahkians Play Host to Key Homestand

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (February 7, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian basketball team will play host to a crucial weekend as they take on the Lady Colonels of Eastern Kentucky at the Show Me Center this Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. Southeast Missouri is 13-6 overall and 7-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. They are in the midst of a three-game winning streak with victories over Tennessee Tech, Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State. Senior forward Lori Chase was named OVC Player of the Week this past week after she averaged 23.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. They have wins over Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, Murray State, Tennessee-Martin, Morehead State, Eastern Illinois, Gardner-Webb, Lipscomb, Samford and Oakland City, but have lost to SMS, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Indiana State, Oklahoma, Eastern Kentucky, and Austin Peay. Southeast is being led by senior foward Loir Chase. Chase is first in scoring and rebounds with 14.6 and 6.1 per game marks. She is first in three-point percentage with her 39 percent mark. Junior guard Kenja White's 14.1 points per game is second on the team. She is third on the team in three-point percentage with a 28 percent average. Junior forward Carina Souza is fourth in scoring with a 11.1 per game average, as she, White, and Chase are the only Otahks to start every single game this season. Junior guard Yashika Sidbury is fourth in scoring with 10.7 points per game and continues to lead the team in free-throw shooting averaging 91 percent from the line. She ranks among the league leaders in that category, as well. She is second in three-point shooting with a 38 percent mark from behind the arc. The Lady Colonels are being led by junior guard Katie Kelly. She is averaging 15.1 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per contest. She dishes out five assists a game. Miranda Eckerle, Pam Garrett, and Teresa McNair average 13.3, 11.8, and 10.7 points per game, respectively. McNair picked the pockets of Southeast players nine times in the last meeting and she is leading the league in that category with 4.6 steals per contest. EKU leads the conference in scoring with a 79.4 per game mark. They are allowing 70.8 points per game and shoot 44 percent from the field. They shoot just under 30 percent from behind the arc, and 76 percent from the free-throw line. Southeast will be in action next on Monday as they play host to the Eagles of Morehead State. The game will be poster night as the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a limited edition Otahkian poster designed by coach Smith. Andre Shepherd, a member of the Temptations will sing the National Anthem and provide halftime entertainment. Tip off is slated for 7:00 p.m. |
