Sami Jo Cotton Records Hat Trick

Brentwood, Tenn. - Junior guard Sami Jo Cotton out of Crowder, Okla.is putting together quite a show, making a huge impact in the conference in her first season with the Otahkians. As announced by the league office Mon., Feb. 18, Cotton sets a new league record as she brings home the OVC Newcomer of the Week award for the third week in a row. Prior to last week, the most times anyone had ever won the award was three, but Cotton has now claimed the award five times.

Cotton wins the award after averaging 15.5 points, 4.5 three-point field goals, four assists, three steals and two rebounds per contest over the two-game span last week. During the span she also set four new career-bests and moved into fifth place in school history for three-pointers made on a season with 55, just one away from fourth. Against Eastern Illinois on Tues., Feb. 10, Cotton drained twenty points, including seven from the field and six three-pointers, both career-bests. She also added two rebounds, three assists and one steal. She followed that performance up with an excellent all-around game against Tennessee State on Sat., Feb. 14. She netted 11 points, while bringing down two off the glass, dishing out five assists and coming up with four steals. Both her five assists and four steals were new career-bests.
 

 

On the season Cotton is leading the team to a 12th place national standing in three-point field goals per game. While in the individual standings, Cotton ranks 38th in the nation with a 39 percent three-point shooting accuracy, while ranking second in the OVC. She has really been producing points as of late for the squad, as she has climbed to second on the squad in points per game with 11.0 per outing.

As a squad, the Otahks are providing that the OVC Newcomer of the Week award belongs in Cape Girardeau. The team has now claimed the award fifteen out of twenty-one times awarded, while senior Kenja White brought home OVC Newcomer of the Year honors last season.

Watch Cotton and the Otahks in action tomorrow, Feb. 19 and Sat., Feb. 21 as they close out their home regular season play. Both contests will be played at the Show Me Center at 5:00 p.m.
