Redhawks NCAA Dreams Start with Murray State in the 1st Round of the 2006 O'Reilly OVC Women's Basketball Tournament

The Redhawks make their ninth-straight OVC Tournament appearance as they grabbed the No. 2 seed at the 2006 O'Reilly OVC Women's Basketball Tournament. They host No. 7 seed Murray State at the Show Me Center in the 1st round of the tournament. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28. The Redhawks are 4-1 at the Show Me Center in OVC Tournament home games

The Redhawks clinched their first OVC regular season title when they defeated Jacksonville State in their regular season finale 87-72. The win gave the Redhawks a share of the OVC title with Tennessee Tech.

For the second time this season the Redhawks had two players finish with 20+ points led by Tatiana Conceicao's game-high 25 points. Natalie Purcell recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

This is the second-straight season the Redhawks have received the No. 2 seed and the third time in the last four seasons.


The Lady Racers make their third-straight OVC Tournament appearance after finishing tied for sixth in the OVC standings. They head into the match-up with a record of 11-16 and 9-11 in the OVC. They won three of their final four games including a 55-45 victory over Tennessee-Martin.

Reigning OVC Newcomer of the Week Joi Scott scored a game-high 23 points on 10-14 shooting. Jill Fulkerson added 15 points and Gerrace Matthews added 11 points off the bench.

Scott, a transfer from Northern Illinois where she was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2003, leads the team in scoring and rebounding averaging nearly a double-double with 20.6 ppg and 8.9 rpg while shooting .556 from the field. She has won six OVC Newcomer of the Week honors including the last three.

Freshman Ashley N. Hayes is averaging 11.1 ppg and 5.3 boards per and was named the OVC's Freshman of the Week, the third time this season she has been honored. Junior Ashley B. Hayes is averaging 8.5 ppg. Preseason All-OVC 2nd Team selection Shaleea Petty averages 5.1 ppg.

The Lady Racers return six letterwinners including three starters from a team that went 9-19 last season including 5-11 and tied for 8th place in the OVC.


Southeast holds the all-time advantage against the Lady Racers at 23-15. Southeast has won five-straight against the Lady Racers and 10 of their last 11 meetings, including a regular season sweep this season.

In their last meeting on January 28 the Redhawks used a 24-6 run to start the second half enroute to a decisive 71-52 victory. The Redhawks dominated the paint outscoring the Lady Racers 42-22 and 20-2 in 2nd-chance points. Tatiana Conceicao scored 16 of her game-high 21 points in the second half. Lachelle Lyles recorded double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Joi Scott led the Lady Racers with 12 points.


The Redhawks Booster Cub will host a pre-game rally and bar-b-que at 5:30 in the Knox Room of the Show Me Center before their 1st Round Game against Murray State.
