Redhawks Tip-off 2008-09 Season With Exhibition on Saturday

Nov. 6, 2008

The Southeast Missouri State women's basketball team will finally see game action Saturday night, as the Redhawks welcome Maryville University to the Show Me Center for a 5:30 p.m. exhibition contest. The contest will be the Redhawks only exhibition game of the season as they open up the 2008-09 regular season next Friday, November 14 against in-state rival Missouri State.

The Redhawks return ten letterwinners including three starters from a team that went 23-9 and won their second-straight regular season Ohio Valley Conference title. Among the returning letterwinners are Preseason All-OVC selections Tarina Nixon and Sonya Daugherty. Other players to watch are returning starter Rachel Blunt, forward Crysta Glenn, sophomore Tore Fite, senior Tierra Johnson and sophomore Lauren Sharpe.

Five newcomers will see their first action in a Redhawks jersey on Saturday with freshman guard Bianca Beck and center Lesley Adams expected to push for playing time immediately.

Entry to the game is free to all Southeast Missouri State students with a valid ID. Game tickets are available for the contest at the Redhawks Ticket Office in Houck Field House, the Show Me Center Ticket Office or by calling 1-866-SEMO-TIK.

Maryville University is located just up I-55 in St. Louis. The Saints compete at the NCAA Division III level where they have seen much success the last few years. This year's team was selected to finish first in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) in the coaches preseason poll. Last season the Saints finished 24-4 overall and 16-0 in the SLIAC. Head coach Chris Ellis' is in his eighth season and returns 12 players from the 2007-08 squad.

Maryville set the NCAA Division III record for consecutive conference wins last season with 76, a streak that is still active. This season, the Saints will go for its sixth consecutive regular season title and fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
