Cape Girardeau, Mo. - The Otahkians cap off exhibition play this Monday, November 10, as they tip off against St. Louis Goldstar at 7:30 p.m. in the Show Me Center. St. Louis Goldstar is a premiere team in St. Louis composed of former Division I all-stars.

The squad kicked-off action for the 2003-04 season, last Thursday for their second season under the direction of head coach B.J. Smith. The team started the season strong as they took on third ranked team in the nation in NAIA, the Lady Bulldogs of Union University. They handed them their first defeat in three games with an 84-66 blow.

The highly touted recruit from Southeastern Illinois Community College, Chandra Brown, played excellent in her debut. She came off the bench to lead the way for the team with fifteen points. She shot 54 percent from field draining seven of 13 shots, while also bringing down five boards.

Newcomer Sami Jo Cotton and senior Yashika Sidbury as recorded double-digit performances, scoring 14 and 13 respectively. The two combined for seven three-pointers. Cotton lit up for four of seven, shooting 57 percent from behind the arc. Sidbury recorded the other three as she shot 60 percent from three-point territory. Cotton as brought down five rebounds, made two assists, had one block, and made two steals. Sidbury also played a well-rounded game as she fought for eight rebounds, one assist, and one block.

Sophomores Tiffane Ryan and Shannon Proffit also played well as they both added nine points a piece for the team.

The squad came out ready to win from the beginning. At the half, Southeast led Union 45 to 21. The squad lost some intensity in the second half as they were outscored 45 to 39.

Southeast shot well from the floor as they posted a 52.9 field goal percentage, a 42.9 three-point percentage, and a 85.7 free throw percentage. The Otahkians also had a big defensive game. Last season the squad averaged just over one block per game, but the defense came up with eight blocks against Union.

The squad has faced Goldstar for the past two seasons in exhibition and leads the series 2-0 . Last season the Otahkians handled Goldstar 77-68. Southeast was led by Kenja White as she recorded 14 points as she shot remarkably, making 5-7 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range, and 3-3 from the free-throw line. In the previous match-up Southeast dealt Goldstar a 93-60 blow.

After facing Goldstar the Otahkians will travel to Salt Lake City to participate in the first round of the Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament. The squad will take on the Utah Utes, ranked No. 13 by SLAM Magazine, Friday, November 14. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
