Women's Basketball Signs Standout from Dexter, Missouri

Nov. 11, 2004

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Thursday, November 11, 2004) Women's Basketball Head Coach B.J. Smith announced the signing of Rachel Blunt to a National Letter of Intent for the 2005-06 season. The signing of Blunt is the first signing by Southeast during the NCAA's Early Signing Period.

Blunt hails from nearby Dexter, Missouri where she is a member of the highly successful Dexter Lady Bearcats basketball team at Dexter High School. She is a 6-foot forward that Coach Smith expects to contribute immediately when she steps on campus. She was a 1st Team AP All State selection last season as a junior. She was one of only two juniors named to the 12-women All-State squad.

Last season as a junior she was named 1st Team All-Region and was named to the Twin Rivers Lady Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team. She also set the single season school scoring record with 508 points. Blunt is only 206 points away from setting the school's career scoring mark. She averaged 19.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 4.5 apg and shot 82-percent from the free throw line.

A three-year starter for the Lady Bearcats, she has helped her team to a 56-17 record during her three years. Her teams have played for the District Championships the last two years.

"I'm extremely happy that she decided to stay in the area and play for us," said Coach Smith. "A number of schools recruited her, but she liked the direction that we are going with our program."
